Ways For Kids To Earn Money

By Joshua Jenkins
Growing up means many new responsibilities. When a child wants something it could be a good idea to make them earn money to pay for it. This is an important step in becoming independent and luckily there are many ways for kids to earn money.

The kind of work a kid should be doing is dependant on the age of the child. A 6-12 year old child will still be trying to grasp the concept of currency and thus it would be advisable to make the process fun. Whether this means helping the child to create something for friends and relatives or rewarding them if they create anything at all is up to the parent. Either way, the important thing is that the child has created something. Rewarding a child for cleaning up around the house can be a good way to teach the importance of work. Some kids will respond well to this and others will not. Try to keep it enjoyable, this will prove advantageous when they grow older.

An older child can be shown how to do jobs outside of the home. A paper run is a good option in a safe neighbourhood, however this can be a dangerous job as well. Accompanying the child on the paper run could help them adjust as well as allowing parents the opportunity to meet the neighbours. Baby-sitting is a job which requires a young person to be consciously minded. Leaving a child with another child should always be a measured option, making sure your child knows safety procedures is a must. This may mean providing important telephone numbers e.g: The police, fire department, ambulance, doctor etc. Letting any neighbours aware of the situation can also provide re-assurance.

Walking the neighbourhood dogs is an excellent way for a child to earn some money as well as keep fit. Allow the child to get to know the dogs and become comfortablw with them, it is important that the kid has control of them at all times and thus a degree of authority needs to be established. Selling lemonade is a lucrative business opportunity on a hot day, with a bit of luck this will teach the child about the importance of courtesy and politeness. Washing the family car is a fun way for kids to earn money. Inside and outside can become separate jobs with more than one child, this will help each focus on their own job and will provide variety.

Providing a child with the opportunity to earn money is a useful way to help them become money-savvy. Jobs around the house are the best, however any type of work will be beneficial.
