How To Write Poetry

How to write poetry

Poetry is a beautiful and complex thing. There is no true way to help someone write poetry, it is something that you have to work on and develop with time. The best poets works are different and unique. Alan Ginsberg and Denise Levertov are very famous American poets, it isn't their rhyming ability that makes them stand out. It is their point of difference to every other poet that makes them so unique. Ginsberg utilises things like ryhthm and speed to good effect, he knows how to captivate the reader and uses this knowledge to effectively deliver a meaningful message. Likewise Levertov understands the concept of difference. What makes her poetry so good is her ability to describe and portray things so vividly. Combining the merits of these two poets would be to create a poem that is rich in meaning yet interesting in style and format.

Start writing a poem by writing down some idea or concept. Whatever you decide your poem is going to be about it is important to translate your ideas on to a page. Get yourself a book for poetry, this will give you the motivation to write and thus help you dramatically. Jot down things that effect you personally. gins berg wrote about things like war and politics, he was a voice for people and knew how to use poetry to translate his ideas. If you feel passionate about things in society like war or race, write about it. What is it that you are passionate about? If you have had a really great relationship then write about it. Talk broadly about things like how you met, how you grew and how things fell apart. You could also speak very personally, talking about things like how she/he smelt, what you were wearing, where you were went etc. Levertov talks about very small things in very broad ways, like eating fruit, describing the taste and texture.

The main thing to remember when you write poetry is that it is a personal creation. You didn't write it for anyone but yourself. Even if you plan on writing poetry for someone don't let there possible reactions stop you from writing certain things. How to plan poetry is a debateable topic. I wouldn't recommend having a plan at all. Writing from the top of your head is the freshest and most personal way to do it, in saying this it would be foolish to believe that the first draft will be the last. Go over what you have written and try and find other ways of doing it, whether it changes a lot or very little doesn't matter, the important thing is that you are critiquing your own work.

Writing poetry is something that you have to try. Things like education and upbringing are irrelevant, poetry is not selective and thus everyone can write it. It is not a matter of learning how to write poetry but more a matter of practising. You will feel yourself improving as you do it and so the most important thing is practice.
