How To Write Lyric
By Joshua Jenkins How to write lyric
Writing your own lyrics is an exciting opportunity for anyone with creative flair. The best thing about writing a lyric is that it is non selective, anyone can do it and it is a personal activity. Not only is writing lyrics a fulfilling task but it is also lucrative business. Many people make a living out of music, some become hugely famous. The Beatles certainly didn't predict that they would become as big as they did and are, it happened through the writing of really good tunes and lyrics.
Learning how to write lyrics is a matter of practice and trial and error. If at first you don't succeed keep on trying. Start with a theme or idea. In musical terms and idea is called a motif, and a motif is the most important thing to song writing. How you choose your theme is completely up to you, you may want to write about something personal like a relationship, or you may want to write about something political, the choice is yours. The beauty of writing lyric is that there are no rules or standards. If you have a good idea the only thing stopping you is yourself, you only have yourself to blame if it doesn't come out right. This is not the case for a jingle writer who writes songs all day but they are part of commercials or television programs. Still, the issues facing you are the same as those facing the jingle writer, the main problem is creative blocks. Be inspired! If you want to learn how to write lyric, you need to have some material to write about. If you lead a rather boring existence then it is time to go out and be amazed. There is an endless amount of inspiration in the world, you just have to see it. Go for a walk instead of watching television, go to a gig on a Friday night, do something different. You will soon have lots of memories to call upon and a whole lot of material to write lyrics for. When you write the lyrics don't get carried away with what people might think, don't worry about rhyming, but in saying that, it is always a good way to get started.
Start simple and build from there. Sit down and write out some ideas, concentrating on specifics, the small things that you notice about something. Then get broader and move to paint the scene, let the reader/listener know what's going on. Write down everything and anything on a sperate page. This is where you can choose the best bits and pieces from. This separate page should be like a storehouse, as you write your lyrics you will pull resources from the separate page, how often and how many times you utilise the separate page is up to you. I can predict that as you become used to writing lyric you will need the separate page less and less, instead relying on your creativity and memory to fill in the gaps.
Learning how to write lyric is easy and fun. If writing songs is something you have always wanted to do then now is your chance. Just start writing, there are no rules when it comes to write lyric so you don't have to show it to anybody. It could be a personal thing that you do to relieve stress. On the other hand I would recommend that you do show someone because it is always cool to get feedback on things like songs.
