When starting to write a thesis, the end may seem incredibly distant. There's no doubt, to write a thesis is a long and gruelling process which will test you physically and mentally. For those of you that don't know how to go about writing a thesis, let this be your guide. Learning how to write a thesis is luckily easier than writing the thesis itself!
For a variety of reasons, it is a good idea when starting to write your thesis to write a plan of your work first. This is because when you now sit down to write, you have specific, measurable and attainable goals to aim for, which are the specific parts you wrote down in your plan. This will help you to avoid those moments of frustration when writer's block hits. Essentially, knowing how to write a good thesis begins with knowing how to write a good plan.
The next piece of advice for those who want to know how to write a thesis is backup, backup, backup! Before starting to write your thesis, organize copies and duplicates and triplicates if necessary. In this respect, take the extremely pessimistic view that something will happen to your computer or your files at some point during the thesis. Have at least one copy always sent as an email to your own email address, and have at least one hard copy saved, in a different location from your computer. While this may seem like over-cautiousness, imagine spending two or three years of your life writing your magnus opus only to lose it all due to a theft!
Setting a timeline is another good idea for those of you wanting to know how to write a thesis. With such a hard task to face, it is sometimes tempting to leave it for another day, which quickly becomes another week and so on. By setting yourself strict time limits and sticking to them, you will find the process becomes much easier. Spread the load over the available time you have, rather than cramming it all in to the last half of the time.
At this level of academic writing, it should probably go without saying such things as referencing are critical. At any level of academic writing, markers take a dim view of those who pass off others' ideas as their own, either intentionally or accidentally. Not surprisingly, at thesis level, it is assumed you are aware of these conventions and any such transgressions will be treated harshly. For those of you wanting to know how to write a thesis, keep this point in mind when contemplating passing off someone else's excellent interpretation of events as your own!
A key thing to remember when learning how to write a thesis is to ensure it does not take over your life. While you will have to make sacrifices in terms of how much time you can spend with your friends and family, don't let it permanently damage relationships. Rather, try to use the time you do have with loved ones more constructively, and take the opportunity to enjoy yourself.
For the same reasons, don't let a thesis harm your own health. Those of you who want to know how to write a thesis will probably be aware of the time needed in front of the computer. Even so, make sure you have regular exercise breaks, and avoid too much salty or sugary foods. Keep a supply of healthy snacks nearby and drink plenty of water.
Having to write a thesis is a difficult task, but one that gets easier the more work you do. Believe it or not, it will be worth it in the long run!
