How to write a thesis statement

When you are writing an academic piece of work it is important to keep your style formal. Whether it is for university or school or whatever, your writing will include a thesis statement. A thesis statement is the piece of writing in your essay which states your main point or argument. Writing an effective thesis statement is a matter of practice, if at first you find your thesis statement lacking substance it would be a good idea to try again, and keep trying until you hit the mark. A good thesis statement should provide the reader with a perspective which is completely your own. A good thesis statement will draw upon the relevant points of an essay, along with your personal viewpoint and then turn the information into a statement. How you do this depends on how you want the statement to feel, some guidelines are outlined below.

Any piece of writing carries with it certain points and arguments which, when placed in the context of a question have a direct meaning to the purpose of the essay. The purpose of the essay is to make a point and the point of the essay is your thesis statement. Learning how to write a thesis statement is a matter of practice and a question of how well you know your subject matter. If you know what you are trying to say your thesis statement will be easy to write. If you want to know how to actually 'write' a thesis statement you best option is to read a few others. If you are attending university ask your lecturer if you can read some other essays, maybe from previous years. Have a look at the choice of language, the syntax (sentence structure), the style and other things that may assist you. Once you have a good range of other essays you should be well equipped to write your own. If you are not at university and you are writing for school you should ask a teacher to view other essays, same as above only the language will be less academic. If you want to write a thesis statement for an essay and you are at neither university or school you should read lots of newspapers and magazines which contain essays and should provide you with the necessary guidance to create your own.

Write a few possible options for your thesis statement. It is always a good idea to have a few to choose from, try changing things like your grammar, style and format but also change the words and see which are more effective than others. Once you have written a couple or a few read through them and write down which parts are better than others. Be very specific and critical, this will allow you to filter out the bits which aren't working and help you to write a better thesis statement. You could also give the various versions to friends and family members, they may be completely uninterested but those that are could tell you which things are good and which things are bad. Once you have found which bits are working and which aren't you can begin to write a master copy which should incorporate the best bits from all of the options.

Once you have gone through the processes outlined above you should be ready to write a final copy of your thesis statement. Remember that your thesis statement should encapsulate all of your relevant points and clearly state your position, do that and you will write and effective thesis statement.
