How to write a song

If you love music and appreciate a good song then maybe its time you learnt how to write a song for yourself. Writing good songs may seem like a simple thing to do. We absorb a huge amount of music everyday, through the radio, on television, everywhere. Some of today's artists have managed to pull the wool over somebody's' eyes, their songs are hopeless. This is the culture we live in, a society which praises beauty and sex appeal above the ability to write and play good music. Gone are the days when the charts were filled with talented musicians and skilled song writers. If you think you could write a good song then read the following and get started. Learning how to write a song can be fun, the song should be from the heart.

Start thinking about mood. Do you want to write a love song, a sad song, a song about friends, a song about your dog? Decide what kind of feel you want it to have. Do you want a simple guitar melody accompanied by a single voice? Or an orchestral cacophony of epic proportions? Whichever you choose remember that the song is your own, it is a personal thing and thus should be all of your own bidding. Don't write a gangster rap because it is popular at the moment, write a gangster rap song because you love rap, stick to what you are best at and know well.

The words of the song are the most important aspect. A truly effective song will have truly effective lyrics, it is the thing that people remember and it characterizes the song. Start with writing down some ideas. Write down what you feel passionate about, it may be a relationship that you write about. If you write down the things that seem relevant, such as the moment you met or broke up, you will find it is a good base for the rest to build upon. Why do you love the person? Is it because of the moments you shared, the way they speak or act, it could be a whole mixture of things. Try following a narrative, tell a story, this is how many great songs are written. You have to believe in what you are saying and translate the feelings into words.

Rhyming is not vital. In fact, at times trying to make your song rhyme can ruin it. It may make it cheesy and hollow. It is very obvious when a song has used words only because of their ability to rhyme with others, a truly good song will not rely on it to be good. Another thing to think about is rhythm. The feel ,of the song is dictated to the pace and timing. This includes things like the bass line and drum pattern, but it also includes the pace at which the words are delivered. The Beatles were experts at timing, they knew when to leave space for the instruments to take over and when to accentuate the singing.

Writing a song is a personal thing to do. Learning how to write a good song is not easy. It may take many tries to write a decent song. You will probably be changing and modifying the song all the time, adding bits and pieces when they are needed. How you write your song is completely up to you, there is no template for you to use. Keep trying, that's the important thing.
