So you want to write a movie script? This is a really exciting thing to do. There are heaps of things to consider before taking on this task. Learning how to write a movie script can be pretty simple, its all about creativity and ambition. Are you wanting to write a Hollywood blockbuster or a home video? Most likely somewhere in between, either way it is vital to have a clear, logical and interesting script.
Movies are a huge part of our modern culture. It is often the biggest event of the year when a major movie has a premier, and this means that the movie industry is huge business. A good movie may leave the audience feeling happy, excited, sad, thoughtful, fulfilled or angry. These emotions are created through a combination of techniques utilized to make the movie like it is. These techniques range from things such as lighting which sets the mood, cinematography which ensures a good-looking movie, editing which is vital, and scriptwriting which is the foundation of all action. The scriptwriting is the most important part of making a movie in my opinion, it lays the groundwork for all other processes after it. Writing a script is something which will provide you with a lot of joy and satisfaction that is unless you become frustrated half-way through and throw the script at you fireplace, at which point the joy and satisfaction will be absent. Learning how to write a script is easy. Taking on the task is not.
Writing a script may sound pretty straightforward but this is a misguided assumption. There is a lot of thought and time involved, and it should be something which you are particularly careful to make right. Start with an idea. Is the script going to be another action filled adventure through peril and danger or a psycho-thriller detailing the exploits of an axe murderer? Whether you choose one of these ideas or something different is important because the movie should always be based around a theme or idea. Writing the script for the movie in this way will help you keep things in context as you go. It would be a shame to read back over your script and find it makes no sense whatsoever. Keeping track of character developments and plot events will ensure you are aware of what is happening at all times. Nobody will want to see a movie with a script that is too confusing.
How your movie script is formatted is up to you. It is advisable to create a premise to accompany the script. This is a short description of the movie including the main themes, characters and plot. Settings, camera angles and how-to instructions are optional inclusions. The main point is to translate your idea through words. The script itself should be typed, allowing room for notes by making it double-spaced, this will aide anyone reading it greatly. The writing of the movie script will require a lot of drafts and re-writing, but don't be reluctant in revising the text, it will help you in the long run. A movie script shouldnt be rushed, find out how best to write at your own pace, dont rush it.
