If there are points you feel strongly about and find some interest in, you should write a letter of interest to the editor. The editor will read your letter and you may even get published in the next paper. How you do this is up to you but there are some things to think about. There are many ways to write a letter of interest, your best bet is to do what feels best for you, your own style is important and so you should try to write with your own voice. To find your own voice you should try writing practice letters, these can be as formal or informal as you like, in fact its best to try both. With a little practice you will begin to see which style best suits you and begin to find your voice. Learning how to write a letter of interest is a matter of personal determination.

A letter of interest is something which is personal and subjective. This means that there is no straightforward way of formatting the letter, it all depends on the context, there are many ways to learn how to do it. In saying this, there are certain methods which would be more recommendable than others when you go to write a letter of interest. You need to write an introduction, this is the first thing the reader sees and thus should be trying to encapsulate your argument. So outline everything you are going to say, this way the reader is aware of your position immediately, this will help them comprehend your letter of interest. The next thing to write on your letter of interest is the main body. In your main body you are placing all of your relevant points down and using examples and proof to back them up. Remember that your objective is to make a certain point. Don't stray too far off the mark and your letter of interest will remain cohesive. Each time you bring another point into the argument you need to back it up with examples and explanations, this way you are providing reasons. You should move between points with subtlety and fluidity, making the piece easy to read and follow.

Once you have put all of your points into the letter of interest you are ready to make a summation or conclusion. This is where you collate all of your points and make a overall statement about the issue. You should write a quick reference to the points made and state why they are the most valid. In your conclusion you can never bring any new arguments into the letter of interest, this is very bad structure and could ruin your argument. Write all of your points in the main body and leave the conclusion to do what it is supposed to. Within your conclusion you need to write a personal opinion on the issue. Your letter of interest is an opinionated piece of writing and so you need to include your own opinion as a matter of duty. Your opinion is the most important part and so it should be where you really write what you think, the more direct and straightforward the better.

Writing a letter of interest is a good way to express your opinion and get involved in public debate, if at first your letters aren't being published you should keep trying, people will soon start to take notice.
