How To Write A Book Report
By Alan Leach Having to write a book report has been a favourite homework assignment of teachers for years. The basic point is book reports are not going to disappear in a hurry so like them or loathe them, it pays to do them properly. Learning how to write a book report is not difficult, so follow these steps and you will find a book report becomes more than just a burden.
Hopefully it should go without saying that the first step in learning how to write a book report is to read the book! While you may try to get around this by reading a primer about the book, it won't give you an in-depth understanding of the book or its characters. There is no substitute for sitting down and reading the book yourself.
Although you want to know how to write a book report, the advice here is that the first time you read the book, forget about the book report. Just read the book and enjoy it. Once it becomes part of an assignment, it often becomes a chore to read, but remember these books were not written in the first place to punish you, but to inform and entertain!
Once you have read through it once, read through again. This time, make notes as you go, with page references so you can check back later. The important thing to remember when learning how to write a book report is that you don't need to mention everything that happens in the story. Give a brief overview of the plot, the setting and the characters. Keep in mind though, that your teacher may have given you specific instructions when setting the book report assignment so follow those carefully.
When learning how to write a book report, it is important to use a suitable structure. While your teacher may have given you a structure to use, if not it is a good idea to start with an introduction which mentions the title of the book and the author, and gives specific facts about the setting and the main characters. The main body of the report will then concentrate on the plot and the feelings and emotions of the characters before the conclusion.
The conclusion is often where you can give your thoughts and feelings towards the book. A large part of learning how to write a book report is to avoid giving too many facts about the book, but to give your feelings and emotions towards the plot and the characters. Your teacher will probably be looking for you to express your feelings towards what the writer was trying to say. Though this might seem difficult, it may help to remember when writing your book report that there is often no one right answer. As long as you can back up your opinion with examples from the book, you should be credited for this.
When learning how to write a book report, it is crucial to write a first draft. Then you can edit it and make changes as necessary before writing the final draft. Write this on a word processor and check the work carefully once you have finished for mistakes and clarity.
While it helps if you enjoy reading, following the above steps will make writing that book report much easier. Hopefully by now you should know how to write a book report and you will achieve not only higher grades but a greater appreciation of what writing a book report entails.
