How To Use Chopsticks
By Leeanne Utiger Have you ever dined at a Chinese Restaurant and wondered how one really does use chopsticks? Chopsticks are not the easiest things to learn without learning how to use then first. So keep reading, because I am going to give you a few details on how to use chopsticks.
There are a few steps you will need to learn and follow to be able to know how to use chopsticks successfully.
You will have to rest the end of the underneath chopstick in the ‘V' of your thumb and fore finger. You will have to support the chopstick with your little finger and your ring finger.
On learning how to use chopsticks, you discover that you have to hold the other chopstick as if you were going to write with a pen or pencil. This means holding the chopstick between your middle and index finger, supported by your thumb.
You will learn how to keep the ends of the chopsticks at the same length. If you do not have the chopsticks at the same length, you will have many difficulties in trying to use chopsticks.
You will learn how the bottom chopstick should remain in place and never move, it is the chopstick on the top that does all of the moving, more of a pivotal motion.
You will learn a few manners that go with knowing how to use chopsticks as well. It is suggested that when you are not using the chopsticks, you place them in the chopstick rest. You will in addition learn how to moisten the chopsticks prior to eating with a little water. This helps the food stay on the chopsticks and not fall off between dish and mouth. It is also very polite to never wave your chopsticks around if you are taking part in a conversation. This is considered rude and impolite.
If you are eating Chinese from shared bowls (bowls that each diner can take a helping from), you will learn how to use the tick end of your chopsticks to take your helping from the bowl with. Do not place the thin end of the chopsticks into a shared dish of food. This is not good manners and of course not very hygienic.
It is also not a good idea to lower your head to a bowl, but better to raise the bowl closer to your mouth while using chopsticks. And never blow your nose at a table in a Chinese Restaurant. In the very least, if a sneeze or the need to deal with your nose arises, make sure you turn your head as far away from the table as possible.
Now that I have given you a brief run down on how to use chopsticks, maybe you can pass on these techniques to your friends or family members and then make a booking at an Asian Restaurant to try out your new found skill of being able to eat and use chopsticks.
However bear in mind, that being able to use chopsticks is not going to happen overnight. Knowing how to use chopsticks successfully takes time and lots of patience and practice.
If you find while eating out, that you still have not managed to master the art of knowing how to use chopsticks, you can always revert back to using a knife and fork. Most Asian restaurants supply utensils such as these anyway, just for those of us that have not learned how to use chopsticks yet.
