How To Use A Dictionary
By Leeanne Utiger Being able to use a dictionary is a very useful ability to have, both for children, teenagers and adults alike. Everyone, every where, all over the world, at one stage or another will in fact, need to use a dictionary. So simply put, everyone all over the world will one day have to learn how to use a dictionary.
I am going to describe how to use a dictionary, so once you learn from this how to in fact use a dictionary, you should never have any problems with spelling a word again.
When you get stuck on the spelling of a word you need to use, the most useful tool to look to for assistance with this problem, is a dictionary. Every country throughout the world has a dictionary on hand for their own unique spoken language. So everyone has the ability to use a dictionary for assistance. If in fact the word you are wanting to learn to spell is a recognised word, it will be held and listed within a dictionary for your use.
Now I am going to get into a bit of how to use, and look for a word in a dictionary. Let us use for example the word 'telescope', in my explanation on how to use a dictionary. To begin with, you have to consider what letter this word starts with. Obviously when we say the word 'telescope', we can determine the work does begin with the letter 't'. Therefore we go to the segment of the dictionary where all words beginning with the letter 't' are listed. Ok, now that we are surrounded by many words in the dictionary that begin with the letter 't', how can we in fact make finding this word in the dictionary even easier?
That is simple really. Next we consider what we think the next letter of the word 'telescope' will be. Let us pretend we think it is an 'i'. We then do a search amongst all of the words that begin with the two letters 'ti'. On not being able to find it, (which of course you wouldn't, as the second letter is not an 'i'), you will then have to reconsider how you think the word 'telescope' may be spelt. Now we once more go back to our dictionary, and look under the 't' segment once more, but this time, add an 'e' after the 't'. So we have moved back from the 'ti' segment in the dictionary to the 'te' segment in the dictionary. How did we know to move back in the dictionary to this new sought after segment for our word? If we in fact know our alphabet, we will also know how the letter 'e' comes before the letter 'i'. This is why we made a move backwards in the dictionary to our new segment of choice.
Once we are in the 'te' segment of the dictionary, we now have to consider what the third letter of our chosen word may be. We will choose the letter 'l', as it is rather obvious that the next letter could very well be an 'l'. Finding our word is becoming easier on using a dictionary isn't it? And learning how to use a dictionary over all is rather easy too isn't it?
Now that we have found our first three letters, we simply repeat this whole process until we have located our word in the dictionary in full.
The way we try to locate a word in the dictionary that we already know how to spell, yet need to know the meaning of, is basically the same. We search for the segment of the letter that particular word begins with, and go from there.
There really is nothing hard about knowing how to use a dictionary.
