This will prevent the sprained ankle from stiffening up and going all tense. Of course, you only be able to do this as your sprained ankle will let you.

Have two containers deep enough with both cold water and the other with hot water for your sprained ankle and foot to fit into and be covered. First place your sprained ankle foot into the container of hot water and put it through some motions, as much as you can. Once you have done this, take your foot out of the hot water and then place it into the container that holds the cold water. This will stretch and relax the sprained ankle and foot. This technique in treatment will in addition relieve any swelling. Keep alternating between the two containers until you see that the swelling has subsided.

When you feel you able to again put some weight onto the sprained ankle and foot, begin to move about again very slowly and gently. Try weight bearing more so on your other foot, as opposed to balancing your weight evenly on both of your ankles and feet.

If you think it will make things easier, maybe you can try to get hold of a pair of crutches to aid you when you begin to slightly weigh bear on the sprained ankle again.

You will learn how to tell if your sprained ankle is ready for your weight to be put onto it. The sooner you can get up and move about again, even if little by little and slowly, the better you will be and the sooner your sprained ankle will heal. Walking as and when you can will actually activate the nerve fibres, which in turn will give strength back to the ligaments and muscles.
