How To Tie Fishing Knots
By Jared Neilsen How to tie fishing knots
Tying fishing knots is an integral part of being a fisherman. You need to know how to tie fishing knots. Fortunately they are not a difficult thing to learn to do and with a small amount of practice you will know how to tie fishing knots like a pro.
General points:
Knots are the weakness in your nylon. If you ensure that you tie your fishing knots well then you will have nothing to worry about. You don't want to have to talk about the one that got away because your knots weren't up to scratch.
If you wet all your knots before you tie them it will lubricate the nylon and stop friction, which may otherwise weaken the knot and cause it to break. To wet the knots spit on them otherwise you risk getting any contaminants from the water you are fishing in transferred to your mouth.
Arbor knots, this is a basic fishing knots to tie.
Loop the backing around the reel and tie double overhand knots at the end of the loose end.
With the loose end tie overhand knots around the backing line.
Tighten the overhand knots around the backing line while bringing the double overhand knots at the loose end close to the backing line.
Pull on the backing until both knots touch and slide hard against the arbor. That's how you tie arbor fishing knots.
Water knots, this is a slightly more difficult fishing knot to tie
Begin the knot the same way as the arbor, up to step 3.
Pull on all four ends to close the knots.
Use your thumbnails to push the turns close together as you pull on reel and trace line.
That's how you tie a fishing knot.
Notes:
If the two measures of nylon are of noticeable different size, repeat step three to make a three-turn water knot. It is stronger than a two-turn water knot, especially when dissimilar strength nylon pieces are being joined.
Tucked half blood knot this is a hard fishing knot to tie.
Thread the leader trace through the eye of the hook, leaving at least 10 cm of spare nylon to finish the knots.
Wrap the loose end of the trace around the leader five times.
Bring the loose end of the trace over to the hook, and insert it through the loop of nylon you have now made in front of the eye of the hook.
Bring the loose end back up and pass it through the new loop you created in step 3.
Pull the knot down slowly, using a thumb nail to bring the turns close behind the eye. Do not pull tight until you have lubricated the knots..
Tighten the knot by pulling on the leader with the hook bend secured on the ring of your scissors. Jiggle to fully tighten the knot.
Now trim off the left over nylon. That's how you tie a fishing knot.
Needle knot this is one of the hardest fishing knots to tie.
Prepare the leader butt by cutting it at a slant to make a point.
Insert a needle into the end of the trace and out of the side.
Keep trace folded back as you withdraw the needle and insert the leader threading 20 cm out of the side of the line.
Wrap four or five turns around the trace nylon.
Fold the end of the trace back to create loop A
Fold the trace a second time to create loop B.
Hold loop B alongside the end of the fly line where the final knot is to be, and now unwind the five turns, covering loop B with each turn.
While preventing the loops from unwinding, pull on both free ends of the nylon
Finally, push turns closely together, tighten fully and trim off the loose end of leader butt. That's how you tie a fishing knot.
Now you know how to tie an assortment of fishing knots!
