How To Tell If Your Cat Is Pregnant

Late at night you may hear tom cats howling, the female cat is walking around with her tail high in the air, the tom cats are spraying urine on the fence, on your car and around the house. The tom cats are fighting outside at night and there are strange cats walking around in your yard. Female cats let off a scent when they are on heat and this drives the tom cats crazy, it's a sure indication that your female cat is on heat, particularly when you find tom cats sitting on the fence and sniffing around your yard. These are all indications that feline mating season is at hand, but how do you tell if your cat is pregnant?

If this sort of mayhem appears to be going on around in your back yard and you have a female cat, then maybe you are one of the many people who constanly want to know how to tell if your cat is pregnant. If you keep reading this article further you will learn all you need to know on how to tell if your cat is in fact pregnant. There are a few ways you can tell if your cat is pregnant, so i will get into those in breif below.

Typically, the female cat will go on heat and will entice the male cat into breeding. When you female cat does fall pregnant she will immediately go off heat. This means that any male cat that she has previously let mate with her will now be enemy number one. She will shun the affections and mating attempts of the male cat but will sometimes respond to a male calling, or meowing, by sitting near the male but not getting too close so as to let the male cat mate with her. She will sit at a distance and if the male attempts to breed with her she will warn him off with a hiss and some growling. This could be a sign in mating season that your cat is now pregnant.

As we all know cats are very vain, however, when your cat is pregnant this becomes the most important part of the female cats day. She will spend hours grooming herself, constantly bathing herself and her coat will be exceptionally shiny. This is another way of knowing how to tell if your cat is pregnant. The constant grooming becomes a ritual and it is almost like she is preparing herself for a big event.

Your female cat will start to loose weight quite rapidly. She will look thin and frail but do not be alarmed as this is completely normal. She will keep eating her normal food, although she may just snack through the day rather than adhering to her normal eating habits. With the loss of weight, the bulge in her stomach should become obvious. Her nipples will also become fuller as the teat fills with milk.

Your cat will crave attention even more than before she was pregnant. The female cat will usually hang around their owners, or the people they feel closest too when they are pregnant and constantly want to be petted and shown affection. Even a female cat that was previously shy will suddenly warm to human companionship. She may not let you handle her but if you do be sure to handle the cat gently.

A sure way of how to tell if your cat is pregnant is to watch her nesting. Your female cat will find a nice warm spot in which she will nest into. Typically, this place is dark but warm, it will be hidden from other cats and putting a cat in a box with a blanket is a good way to help her nest so that you know where her litter will be when she does give birth. If she doesn't find a nest inside the house she will build one outside the house. If you happen to come across this nest, you will be able to tell if your cat is pregnant.

Now i have gone into some detail about a number of ways to be able to tell if your cat is pregnant. Try being more observant of the cat you want to be able to tell is pregnant or not. Watch her behaviour and see if you see any tell tale signs that she may be pregant.

Cats have a strange way of being able to tell you things anyway - it is simply at times a matter of 'listening' to your cat. Once you have learned how to tell if your cat is pregnant, you may be able to tell others, maybe a family member who has a female cat or a friend just how they too can tell if their cat or cats are pregnant.
