This document is all about how to tell if a diamond is real or not. There are in fact a few ways of being able tot ell if a diamond is real or not, so I am going to go into detail on how to tell this.

To begin with, the only people or professionals who really know how to tell if a diamond is real or not is a qualified and certified gemmologist. Other than taking what you think is a diamond to one of these professionals to find out if the diamond in question is real or not is to do one of a few things. Knowing how to tell if a diamond is real or not, using these other methods does not require any special equipment.

If the diamond in question is loose and un-mounted, place it over something in print, like a piece of newspaper, anything with writing on it. This will be able to tell if a diamond is real or not. If in fact the stone is a real diamond, you should not be able to read the writing through it. This is merely because a diamond will refract so many rays of light, it makes reading through the gem impossible. If the stone is in fact another type of clear glass, you will be able to read the writing through it very clearly.

Another way to learn how to tell if a diamond is real or not, is to shine a small light through the stone. If you see just a rim of light, kind of like a halo impression, the stone is more than likely a real diamond. This is because you cannot see clear images through a diamond, nor clear light.

Another way in knowing how to tell if a stone is a real diamond or not, is to breathe on the stone. If it stays hazy for a length of time, the stone is likely to be a fake, however if the stone clears instantly it will more than likely be a real diamond. Real diamonds will not hold moisture.

A diamond really does hold very unique attributes which will tell you whether it is a validated diamond or not.

Here is another way to tell if a diamond is real or not. If the diamond in question has chipped edges or looks worn, it is probably not a real diamond, but only a cut of glass.

As you can see, there are a number of ways to learn how to tell if a diamond is real or not.

One thing to remember when wanting to learn how to tell if a diamond is real or not, is to always use your commonsense. If you are thinking about purchasing a stone which is meant to be a real diamond, consider the asking price. Often the asking prive for a diamond will tell whether it is real or a fake. Real diamonds are very rarely inexpensive. If the asking price is quite a low figure, then the chances are the stone you are contemplating buying is not in fact a real diamond.

A real diamond will also cut glass rather deeply. So while learning how to tell if a diamond is real or not, also keep this thought in the back of your mind. But while keeping that thought there, also consider the fact that if you resort to this particular test, to know how real the diamond is, you just may be causing damage to a real diamond.

Now that I have given you a little information on how to tell if a diamond is real or not, you can pass this on to anyone else who needs to know how to tell if a diamond is real or not. But I will stress, that if you are serious about finding out if a stone or gem is in fact a real diamond, you do opt to take it to a qualified and certified gemmologist.
