How To Start A Restaurant
By Joshua Jenkins How to start a restaurant
If food is a passion of yours then you may be interested in staring your own restaurant. There are many things you have to think about when undertaking this task, it is important to do the basics properly. Learning how to start a restaurant requires alot of research, so start eating out regularly. To start a restaurant is to start a business and thus the finances are vitally important. The restaurant industry is huge, there are so many people trying to find success in the field, and so starting your own is risky business. This article will hopefully help you learn how to start your restaurant.
Location, location, location. The most important choice when starting a restaurant is deciding where. Most towns will have a restaurant district, deciding whether or not to start out here could take in to account available tenancies, leases and proximity to others. If you are planning to start an Italian restaurant right next to another Italian restaurant, it could mean less potential business for you and thus could be an un-wise choice. Maybe you are best to start a restaurant in a developing area, it may be less up-market for a while but the rent will be cheaper and you can relax without too much competition. Decide how to balance potential customers with running costs etc.
Finding out how best to plan the interior of the restaurant is a matter of taste and experience. Was there ever a restaurant that really stood out in terms of atmosphere? If so try creating a similar vibe. Remember that people need to see their food and so lighting has to be sufficient. Small things like this could greatly effect the experience and thus the likelihood of a return visit from your customers. The outside is also very important. The look of the restaurant is vital to getting foot-traffic in the door, an appealing front could potentially mean more business. Likewise it can effect your marketing.
Does your restaurant only sell one type of food? If so you need to market it as such. An Indian restaurant will use all the images and ideologies of the culture, creating the feel that you are incorporating this in the dining experience. Your advertisements need to be genre specific, capitalizing on the distinctive feature etc. Starting a restaurant can be a tough task. It is important that you get your name out there as quickly as possible. This may mean holding important functions, catering services, starting to invite local celebrities, inviting press, all these things will mean your restaurant is always an option for the potential diner. You should allocate an advertising budget from very early on, it is one thing making delicious food but getting people to pay for it is another. It would be foolish to sit and hope that customers will hear about you through word of mouth. Advertising in both the local and regional/national papers would be a good way to approach it. Starting a restaurant is risky business and thus you cant afford to take too many chances, this form of saturating advertising is very expensive and so it may be that you start with the local papers and the move to place an ad in the national paper once a month or however you choose.
There is no sure-fire way to make a restaurant a success. It is a matter of staring small and planning big. Staring a restaurant requires a lot of patience and hard work, how you go about it is up to you but these two things are vital.
