How to start a book club:

Too much spare time and not enough to do? Do you need some distraction in your daily routine? How about a good way to relax and meet knew people? Start a book club! It is a great answer to all these problems! They are an easy club to start, and with today's technology, if you live far from other people you could always hold it on the internet!

How to start a book club: Tip One:
To start advertise for members. Try your local newspaper, the internet, libraries, churches, bookstores, even you kids school newsletters for like-minded mothers and fathers! The more different places you look for members, the more interesting and diverse your meetings will be! If you find all your members from the same part of the community, you won't have many new ideas in your meetings. Be specific in your club advertisement. Say around how many people you want, what sort of books you are interested in, the atmosphere you want your book club to have, when you want to start your club, etc. Make sure you make yourself very available from these advertisements: email, home number and cell number. But never give out your home address!

How to start a book club: Tip Two:
Hold or start your first club meeting on neutral ground. Find an appropriate café (not to expensive so no one feels pressured to spend) and hold a club meeting about rules, types of books, frequency of your book club meetings, etc. Before this club meeting suggest everyone brings a couple of ideas for initial books, and also ask people what some of their favorite books are. This will give you an idea if you should stick to a certain genre (or avoid certain genres). Consider these things to discuss at your first book club meeting: should there be a limit to how much you are expected to pay for a book? How will the meetings be carried out, will you have a president or chair-person? Where will the meetings be held and should everyone bring something to eat? When will they start? If you have all these issues sorted out before you start it will make life much easier!

How to start a book club: Tip Three:
Discuss the touchy issues at your first meeting: pets, smoking, lateness, cell phones, children, absence, incomplete books, etc. If you have covered all these problems and have ground rules you will find you won't have arguments when they occur! Some book clubs don't like people to take cell phone calls during book club. Some hate going to a host's house when they have a larger dog. Once these issues are clear, communication will be easier and you'll be able to start sooner.

How to start a book club: Tip Four:
Don't expect your club to go smoothly the first time! You may have three people respond to your advertisement, or no people. You may have a group of completely incompatible people. No one might want to host and you'll find the bulk of the responsibility on your shoulders. Take it all as it comes, and if things don't work out, just advertise again and start over!

Remember to relax about the whole process! Things will go wrong the first time you start a club and you'll learn how to run things more smoothly. Just learn from your mistakes and keep plodding on. Hopefully you will find a group of like minded people who discuss good quality books and fascinating ideas!
