How To Sponge Paint

Ok, so you want to learn how to sponge paint?

Learning and knowing how to sponge paint, can be fun, not only for you, but for your children (if you have children). Sponge painting is also a good hobby or craft to learn how to do if you are involved with an organisation, such as a Kindergarten, a School or an Early Education Day Care Center. Sponge painting is definitely an activity that any child can do, and will get a lot of fun from participating in.

Just like anything, there are a few things you will need to make sure you have to enable you to learn how to sponge paint, and then teach others how to paint with sponge. Naturally, you are going to need some sponge. This could be thick or thin, although thicker is better. It is much easier to hold onto a thicker piece of sponge than a thin piece. However if you cannot get your hands on some thicker sponge, the thin sponge will be adequate until you can. You will also need for sponge painting, paper, or cardboard. This is for your sponge painting to be done on. In addition to these things, you are most importantly going to need paints. The more varying colors you have the better. When you begin to know how to sponge paint, you will also need a pair of scissors.

Now that you have all the required things to actually get into being able to sponge paint, you are almost ready to begin. First of all, you will need to take your sponge and the pair of scissors. Simply cut out from the sponge varying shapes. These shapes can be any size you want them to be. Sponge is very soft, so you should have no difficulties when cutting out your shapes. A few suggested shapes for using when you sponge paint are: squares, triangles, circles, hearts, stars, ovals - almost any imaginable shape you can think of. Even be creative when you decide to sponge paint and make your own shapes. Once you have shapes cut out for your sponge painting, you can then organise your paints. You will need to have purchased some good quality art paint. Some of these come in a powder form, and need to be mixed up with water. If you have purchased paints such as this, then simply follow the instructions on the packaging of the paints.

Once you have your paints all mixed up and placed into separate pottles, or ice-cream containers, whatever small container you have on hand that you don't mind placing paint into - you are ready to begin to learn how to create a wonderful piece of art using sponge painting.

Make sure you have lay down lots of newspaper in your art work area, especially if you are at home. If you are learning how to sponge paint, or teaching others how to sponge paint in a child education centre, you may not need to lay down newspaper. This is simply because in these centers there are generally wipe down tables supplied for such activities.

Now that you have your equipment needed to be able to sponge paint, and your artwork area is prepared for you, you can begin. Choose the piece of paper you want and simply get to it. All you need to do, is choose and pick up the shaped piece of sponge you wish to use first. Place one side of the piece of shaped sponge into your tray or bowl of paint. If you have your paint in paint pottles, simply brush the paint onto one side of the shaped piece of sponge with a paintbrush. Once you have sufficient paint on the side of your sponge, (this being the bottom edge/side), you can then place this shape of sponge onto your piece of paper, paint side downwards obviously. When you take the sponge away, you will have left a painted imprint of the cut out piece of sponge on your piece of paper.

Quite simple and easy really isn't it. Just repeat this procedure with the other shapes of sponge you want to use for your sponge painting artwork. Be creative and see what kind of picture you can make using different shapes of cut out sponge.

As I said above, this really is an activity that most if not all children love learning how to do. It is not an activity that has to only be done at a learning center, which makes it more fun, and very adaptable to any surrounding.

Have sponge fun!
