How To Save Money On Groceries

By Polly Hamilton
It is very simple to save money on groceries, and it is very simple to learn how to! You just need to stop making lazy decisions and stick to your own rules! Here are some useful rules, and you can use them or not as you please. The more of them you use, the more you will save on groceries.

How to save money on groceries by making a list:
Before you go to the grocery store, make a list of all the things you need. Also make a list of all the things you want (chocolate, magazines). Pick one thing from the wants list and put it on the needs list, and there you have your grocery list! The challenge is this: to go to the store and buy only what is on the list. You will feel much more satisfied if you can stick to this rule, and save a lot of money on the extra groceries you didn't buy (impulse buys).

How to save money on groceries by thinking ahead:
Make a list during the week as you discover things you need. A hand thing to have is a pen and list stuck to the fridge. Don't go to the grocery store hungry or in a rush. This will lead to bad decision making and wasting of your money! Plan the time that you will go shopping. It is best to go at off-peak hours as you will feel less stressed and rushed.

How to save money on groceries by being a clever shopper:
Say you want a packet of chocolate biscuits, they are on your list and you get to the chocolate biscuit section and pick the packet you see first. Don't! You should look above and below eye level, where the cheaper options are stored. Avoid buying eye level items, they are put there to tempt you and trick you into spending more and not take advantage of deals. If you don't look thoroughly you won't save money on your groceries. If you have your kids with you give them an item and tell them it is their mission to hunt out the cheapest option. It keeps them out of you hair and saves you money!

How to save money on groceries by buying bigger:
Buy more and go only once a week, you'll save money on petrol. Buy bigger packets of cereal, flour, potatoes, etc. They last longer and end up being cheaper per weight. Buy lots of a certain meat when it is on special and freeze it. You may not need chicken, but if its cheap, stock up! The same goes for canned food which your family regularly eats. If baked beans are on a special price buy twice as many. That way when they are normal price a week later you won't have to buy anymore!

How to save money on groceries by making a menu:
Many people don't like this rule as it is too rigid. However it does help some busy families. A week or so ahead of time create a menu of dinner meals for seven days and buy specific food accordingly. This helps save you money on groceries in two ways: You don't have to make special trips for special spur of the moment dinners (but you can pre-plan special dinners!) and you won't buy more than you need! If you know you are making lasagna you'll know how much mince to buy and not get too much or too little!

It is very difficult to make yourself adhere to these rules, but if you do you'll notice very quickly how much you have learnt to save money on groceries!
