How To Save Money On Gas

By Joshua Jenkins
The rising price of fuel is a huge problem for consumers. Not only does it affect day-to-day travel but it also has an effect on the economy, which is problematic for everyone. Whilst the average consumer cannot change the price of gas, there are many ways that you can be more cost effective and save money. The most obvious way to cut costs is to travel to the cheapest station in your area, if it means a long detour away from your journey then it is most likely not worth it, however if you find a cheaper gas station near to you, then use it.

Understanding the mechanics of your vehicle is a huge asset, it will greatly increase the ability to utilise its potential. This doesn’t mean you must understand every nut and bolt and its purpose, but it means having a solid knowledge on what is best for your car. If you notice your car is using more gas than usual it is a good idea to get it serviced, the costs involved should be balanced by the renewed fuel economy. Changing the oil is also beneficial, this reduces wear and friction which both reduce fuel economy, it is a cheap and easy way to keep the engine running smoothly.

Gas contamination is something which occurs underneath the gas stations, it occurs when the station is not busy and so the gas becomes stagnant, busier stations shouldn’t have this problem and thus the fuel is better for your car, this means travelling to a busy station could help the gas go a little bit further. Purchasing low-octane gas is much cheaper and should have no detrimental effects on any vehicle, if your engine is ‘knocking’ or ‘pinging’ then a higher octane is probably necessary but otherwise stick with the cheaper option. Another useful tip is twisting the pump nozzle 180 degrees when it has finished, this can give you up to half a cup of extra fuel which will no doubt add up in the long term.

Maintaining your tires is another way of reducing fuel costs, this means checking the pressure at least once a month, it is a good idea to check them when you haven’t been driving, this will give you a more accurate reading. Under-inflated tires can greatly increase gas consumption, adding to the already high costs, also, keeping a well maintained set of tires will be beneficial when you need to sell the car and it will prolong when you need to buy new tires. Avoiding rough roads will keep the tires in good care as well as saving petrol due to less friction.

Often the most practical ways to save money on gas are the most obvious. Combing several trips into one can greatly decrease the costs involved as well as freeing up time. Commuting to work can be a huge hassle, no-one likes sitting in traffic and so avoiding peak hours can help lower your stress levels as well as save you money, stopping and starting in heavy traffic can be really bad for your car and is also bad for fuel economy. Try car-pooling or public transport, these can be fun and save you a lot of money. Catching the bus or train is very cheap compared to the price of petrol and despite the annoying late busses and trains it will greatly benefit the commuter financially. Becoming fuel-wise is easy. Utilising the methods shown above, you can save lots of money on fuel, it will be worth every effort.
