By Jason Taingahue
So you want to know how to restring a guitar. Well, then I suggest you read what I have to say here. You may learn all you need to know on how to restring a guitar.

When you learn how to restring a guitar, you will also learn that strings come in many thicknesses, and that some strings may be made of nylon, while other strings can be made of wire. You will also find out when you learn how to restring a guitar that the nylon strings are much harder to come by than the wire strings. You will also learn that some strings are quite costly while other strings are not. More often than not, the low cost strings will do the job just fine and are more than suitable to use for when you learn how to restring a guitar.

When you learn how to restring a guitar, you will discover that sets of strings come in sixes. It is always recommended to restring all of the strings at once as opposed to just when one is in need of restringing. This will in hindsight make the sound of your guitar sound even.

When finding out how and when to restring a guitar, you will also learn that when a string sounds dull or is actually quite hard to tune, it is in fact a sign that the string needs restringing.

When you decide to restring using nylon strings, you will learn how to restring these so they do not slip under any strain or tension. The nylon strings have to be tied to the bridge in such a way, they do not do this. Often the bass strings will have a slightly thicker end to them, this is the end you therefore have to tie over the bridge of the guitar. When you want to learn how to restring a guitar, sometimes it does pay to have an illustration in front of you so you can check you are actually restringing the guitar correctly. When you tie the string to the bridge of the guitar, make sure you twist the string around the back edge of the bridge. This will make sure that as the tension increases, the friction also increases and the string becomes and remains fixed.

When you learn how to restring a guitar using wire or steel strings, you will discover that these strings have a small ball on the end of them that will stop the string at one end. You need to push the ball ends into the holes so that the ball drops downwards into the actual guitar. Then place the peg back in the hole of the guitar and pull the string gently until you feel the peg has stopped the ball from moving anywhere. As you tune your guitar you may have to place pressure on the peg to prevent the ball from popping back up.

Remember when you learn to restring a guitar to always leave enough slack in the string to wind itself around the peg, before you snip off any excess string from the guitar once you have finished restringing the guitar.

You may need to use a pair of pliers to snip off the excess string if scissors do not seem to be sufficiently sharp enough to do the job.

Now that I have given you a few tips on how to restring a guitar, you can now have a go at learning how to restring a guitar and prove to yourself you are actually capable of learning how to restring a guitar. And if you manage to restring a guitar, maybe you know someone else who needs to know how to restring a guitar. If so, then you could either show them how to restring a guitar, or explain how to restring a guitar while they sit next to you and actually restring their guitar themselves, with your guidance.
