How To Remove Wall Paper
By Jenna Litchfield Wallpaper, the most common thing people remove in home renovations usually to re-paper the wall, or to paint or plaster it or even to knock it out completely.
We all know the most wallpaper is stuck on by a form of glue, and some times people tend to layer the wallpaper on, so you end up with about 6 layers of wallpaper on your wall.
However it is a great thing peeling back the layers and removing the wallpaper and seeing the old original wallpaper from when the house might have been first built.
A good way to start removing wallpaper is to cover the floor with a sheet or something similar as if you have carpet it can require a lot of vacuuming to remove it so its better of to have a sheet that you can just pick up and shake into a rubbish bin, and remove all furniture from the around the walls or cover them with a sheet as well.
Gloves and safety glasses are a must, as dust and other particles and fall down into your eyes; some broad knives e.g. putty knife for scraping the wallpaper off and a stepladder for the high places.
Those are just the more common items to have; it all depends which way you are going to remove your wallpaper.
Some simple methods people use, is to get under a layer of wallpaper with a knife or something similar, lift it up and pull, however this usually leaves a brown film of paper on the wall which can be removed by damping the paper with a spray bottle filled with water and peeling it off, easy cost free method however it takes a long time.
Another method on how to remove wallpaper consists of scouring the wallpaper with a wallpaper-scouring tool, which perforates (puts little holes in the wallpaper) the wallpaper without damaging the wall, and then apply a wallpaper glue/paste stripper with either a paint roller or something similar and a small paint brush for the fiddly bits.
The paint remover soaks through the perforations and breaks down the glue behind the wallpaper.
Starting at the top then work your way down applying the stripper, then let it soak for about twenty minutes then the wallpaper should just peel off, or be able to be scraped off really easily.
Another way to remove wallpaper is to use wallpaper and paste remover sheets, just by soaking them in water then placing them on the wallpaper for thirty minutes keeping it wet at all times, then peel off.
Leave for longer if there's multiple layers however.
All methods are great however time consuming, so prepare for long hours of hard work, another thing is to be very careful if you are working on plaster walls, or walls that can be easily nicked or marked.
It helps if you have a plaster repair kit, or some extra plaster to fill in the holes.
Afterwards, wipe down the wall with a sponge to remove all traces of product you used to remove the wallpaper, then dispose of your removed wallpaper, vacuum up the loose dust and your finished.
