How To Read Tab
By Jason Taingahue Do you want to learn how to read tab? Well if that is the case then read on and I will explain to you how to read tab.
Before we start learning how to read tab, we must obtain a guitar. The next thing that we have to do when learning how to read tab is to decide weather we are going to play the guitar with a pick or with our hands.
Now that we have everything that we need in order to learn how to read tab, we can now proceed to the actual process of learning how to read tab.
When learning how to read tab, we must have a brief definition of what tab actually is and I have a basic quote that I like to use in understanding what tab is and it goes like this "Tab is another form of music, and can be applied much the same as sheet music with practice and dedication". And that is exactly what tab is all about.
Now that we have a basic understanding on what tab is, let's start learning how to actually read tab.
Tab is as series of lines and numbers. The lines represent the strings on the guitar and the numbers represent the fret board on the guitar.
So when learning how to read tab, we will take the six lines that represent the guitar strings first and take a look at them. Six lines are draw parallel to each other across ways and the line on the bottom represents the top string or the bass string and that pattern carries on for the representation of the other strings as well.
The next thing that we need to be able to do when learning how to read tab is to be able to understand what the numbers on the line are. The numbers on the lines that we have just learnt about are for all finger placements. So say if we had the number eight on the bottom line, that representation would be that you would puck the first string or the bass string with the finger pushing down on the string on the eighth fret. If there are numbers straight underneath each other on the tab then that means that you play those numbers all in one strum or pluck. Another name for a series of numbers that are played like this is a chord.
Remember that all tabs are divided into sections. These sections are the same as music and are divided into sections so that the music can be counted in beats of four. It's just the same as reading normal music really.
Another rule to follow when learning how to read tab is don't get frustrated if you can't read it at first. Make sure that you take your time and practice will make you a hell of a lot better. I would advise short practice sessions as well. I believe that the mind needs a rest so that it can come back to the next practice session fresh.
Well try this method that I have showed you on learning how to read tab. I am an actual guitar tab reader myself and I find tab easier to follow than sheet music. Who knows, maybe you will find it easier as well.
