When you first begin to look into how you can publish a book, you will very quickly learn that the bigger of publishers will not even consider to publish your book, unless along with your prepared manuscript, you also have an agent. Most other publishers will be happy to look over your manuscript without you having an agent. So if this is your first book, and you are just beginning to learn how to publish a book, then these are the publishers best suited to you. On learning more about how to publish a book, you will also find out that an agent does come at a cost, but that is like most things these days.
When you discover the procedures you need to go through on being able to publish a book, you will have to be prepared to do some research on presses. You have to get ready a package to submit and the do follow up calls. When you learn how to publish a book and start putting into action the appropriate procedures, it is advisable to keep notes of all interactions you have with varying people and publishers. Dates, times, summaries of conversations, who you spoke with etc.
All of the above are lessons in knowing how to prepare yourself to publish a book. But now you need to know how to get a book published with a publisher, which means, how do you locate a publisher and then submit your manuscript and required necessities to.
That is rather simple. Look at what type of book you have written and then pay a visit to your local library. Once you get there, browse the library shelves, or book store shleves for books similar to your writing style. You will learn how to locate an appropriate publisher to advise you on how you can get your book published. Along the spine of a book, you will see a publishers name. Take note of the name of the publisher. Now that you have learnt how to get the name of an appropriate publisher, you will have to learn how to make contact with them. There is a reference book available that can assist you when you need to learn how to do this. This book is titled: ‘Writers Market' and can be found in the reference section of your library. In this book, you will find all you need to find to tell you how to make contact with a publisher who may in turn one day publish your book.
This book and many others that you can also find in your library will be able to teach you more about how to publish a book also. They are full of specific advice, so it is not really that hard to learn how to publish a book. As I mentioned earlier, it just takes a bit of research and time.
You will have to learn how to now make initial contact with the appropriate person who may be able to help you publish your book. Once you have contact details for the presses, you will have to make a phone call in the least, or write some letters. You will more than likely first get to speak to a secretary. The secretary can then advise you of the name you will need of an acquisitions editor. You will also have to learn how to submit your book and papers. So on talking to this secretary, find out what the requirements are to submit your book, especially given you are an unpublished author at this stage.
Once you have learned how to submit your book for a publisher to hopefully publish it for you, then all you can do, is submit what is required, and cross your fingers hoping for the best. Give it some time, and then make a follow up call to see how things are going. Remember, always accept criticism, both good and bad. Once again, you will learn how to provide a better story if you can accept criticism from a publisher, even if they have chosen not to publish that particular book you wanted to try to publish.
