The keyboard is a very good choice for someone who hasn't played any other instrument because it is relatively easy to learn. Keyboards are often very cheap, this is because many companies make them and so there are many to choose from. Choose the right size for you, some people like having a small keyboard which is perfect to begin on, however bigger models come with more features. In choosing your keyboard make sure you find one that suits you and you are comfortable with, this will be important as your level of skill increases.
The first step is learning the notes. Some beginner keyboards will come with lettering above the keys which tells you which notes you are playing, this is a good feature but should not excuse you from learning the proper keys. With a basic knowledge of keys you will be ready to learn some basic tunes. Songs like 'three blind mice' or 'when the saints come marching in' are excellent beginner songs because they make you use a few notes, they also help to increase your rhythm which is very important. From these melodies you should progress to chords, that means playing certain notes simultaneously to create a tune. Basic chords should only require you use three fingers at first and thus are good starting points. Once a few chords are known it will be time to put them into practice, this means playing chords after each other with rhythm. Coupled with a melody the chords form songs, and it is the repetition of songs which will make you an accomplished keyboardist.
Practice is the most important thing when learning how to play keyboard. Regular sessions and instruction will ensure you keep moving forward, it is vital that you practice to progress. Start by practicing what you know, whether it be individual notes or chords. When you become more advanced in the keyboard you can begin to create your own songs. Most keyboards come with "beat banks" which is an electronic drum accompaniment, turn it on and play some rhythm on the keyboard, this will greatly increase your ability to make up songs. Remember that it is the regular practice that is the focus, don't get lazy and only play when you feel like it. However it is also important that you don't get sick of the keyboard.
A songbook is an excellent way to learn how to play keyboard. There are numerous books available, some are produced by famous musicians which will allow you to play music that people know. Others are more general and have various chord patterns which help provide a broad base of knowledge. These books should be relatively cheap and easy to find, try your local music store and don't be afraid to ask around. Keyboard is a very versatile instrument and thus should not be hard to find material for.
