How To Plant Sod

When you begin to discover how to plant sod, you will in addition learn that sod is more expensive than grass seedlings. However, where the seedlings take a long time to grow, planting sod, will in fact give you instant lawn covering. You will also learn how sod can be planted at any given time of year. You do not have to wait for a particular season to be able to plant sod. You will learn how to water your sod frequently, especially in the hotter months of the year. This will heap maintain the health of the sod and make it grow better. You will learn what sort of sod to purchase. The sod should have a fresh and vibrant appearance at time of purchase. It should also be moist and green, (not brown). You will learn how to tell if the sod is healthy, by simply picking it up by the top. If what you pick up in your hand holds together it is viable and healthy.

Now to knowing how to plant the sod.

You will learn that to plant sod, you will still need to prepare your lawn bed as you would for seedlings. Scatter some highly recommended pre-plant fertiliser over the area in which you want to plant the sod to. You will learn how to work in long straight lines when you are planting sod. You will learn how to lay the sod out, so that the seams from one row of sod do not match up with seams from another row of sod. Avoid any gaps and press together tightly, so that the rows of sod all stay bound together.

You will learn how to trim the sides of the sod rows with a sharp knife. With the pieces you have trimmed off, you can now fill in any gaps that have been left or any strange unfilled corner areas.

You will fast learn how not to wait until the entire lawn has been planted. Sod needs watering often and as soon as possible. So in saying this, you can water the sod as you lay/plant it.

You will also learn how to use a water roller. You simply roll this over the sod you have planted. This will make sure the water is pressed downwards towards the root system of the sod. This will then in turn combine the roots with the soil sufficiently. You will also learn how using this method, will in fact in addition remove any air pockets that may be trapped in the soil where you have planted the sod.

You will now have to know how often to water the sod. As mentioned above, sod needs a lot of water, and does need to stay moist at any given time. It is suggested that you water the sod at least two to three times a day for the first ten days after being planted. Once the ten day period is up, the sod should have by now established a good healthy root system. Regular lawn mowing will now be possible.

That is basically all there is in knowing how to plant or lay sod. So if you are thinking of putting in a new lawn into your garden, maybe sod is the way to go for you.
