Learning how to manage your money is one of the most important skills you will learn in your life. While most of us would agree there are more important things in life than money, knowing how to manage your money allows you to enjoy these things without having to worry about the future.

The first step in learning how to manage your money is manage any debts you might have. While this is often a painful idea, it will be impossible for you to ever manage your finances without seeing off the debt first. Typically, lenders charge much more interest on debts than you will receive in interest for savings. If you are serious about learning how to manage your money pay off your debts. Keep away from loan companies and financing options for purchased goods. If you can't afford to pay for something like a car outright, don't buy it till you can.

One of the most important things you should do if you want to know how to manage your money is to treat your finances like an accountant in a company. You must manage records of all incoming and outgoing money. This doesn't need to take over your life. Simply keep all the receipts, bank details and wage slips and take at least an hour a week to record them into a computer. For those of you who want to learn how to manage your money, while this may seem like a real chore, it can make all the difference. How can you know how to manage your money if you don't know how much money you have coming in and going out?

Once you have a good idea of the state of your finances, the next step in learning how to manage your money is to look for ways to cut expenditures and increase income. When cutting expenditure, check carefully all outgoings over the previous few weeks. Were all of your purchases really necessary? This is often an easy way to cut back on spending. By seeing in black and white where most of your money goes, you can find ways of cutting back on unnecessary spending.

To increase your income, it is important to understand true financial success comes from increasing the number of sources you get your income from. This is a key point to remember if you want to really know how to manage your money. It is obvious that the more forms of income you have coming in, the less dependent you are on just one source, so that even if you were to lose your job, you would still be able to rely on other forms of income.

No matter how small your present income is, it is crucial that you save some of it to be able to manage your money better. When learning how to manage your money better, aim to save around 10% of your income, but more if possible. While it may seem at the start as though this money takes a long time to accumulate, over time you will be surprised how much you can save. The key is when you do your accounts every week to see this money as already spent. This way, you won't be able to touch it. For those of you new to saving, have a new bank account set up just for savings, and get your work to direct debit it from your wages every pay day so that you are not able to touch, and therefore spend it!

While learning how to manage your money is often difficult to begin with, if you establish strict rules now and follow the above guidelines you will find managing your money gets easier and easier with time.
