How To Make Your Own Wine
By Jenna Litchfield A bottle of wine is always lovely on a summer's afternoon or evening, however wouldn't it be great if you could learn how to make your own wine!
You could save on packaging, advertising and production costs, and if you got really good at it you could even start mass producing your wine and turning your wine into a selling product.
Of course you are going to need a great deal of patience when making your own wine, it needs to mature or ferment to your taste, however long that may be you have to just wait!
Sounds great doesn't it, so what do we need to make our own wine, grapes of course! So invest in buying some vines of course you will need to source which type of grape you want to plant and grow for example Chardonnay, Merlot, Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon.
It's all up to your personal budget and your own personal taste.
Ok the overview of making your own wine is to grow the grapes, crush the grapes, strain the grapes, add some yeast, ferment the wine, then bottle the wine then age the wine again, can you see why the process is all about being patient!
Basic equipment needed to make your own wine.
Large nylon straining bag or something or the similar
Food-grade pail or bucket with lid
Hydrometer to measure the sugar levels.
A Thermometer, to measure the temperature your own wine.
Acid titration kit to measure your acid levels.
Clear, flexible half-inch diameter plastic tubing
Two one-gallon glass jugs
Fermentation lock and bung
Wine bottles and Corks
Make sure when your are making your own wine that you keep your wine making area is spotless, as bacteria is your worst enemy in wine making.
Ok basically what you will need is if you're making your own white wine:
Ripe white grapes
1 tablet (of potassium metabisulfite powder)
Tartaric acid, if necessary
Table sugar, if necessary
1 packet wine yeast
Ok once you have picked your grapes you can now crush them!
Put some of your grapes into a straining bag then throw them into a pail so you can squish them.
However remember to use very clean sanitized equipment and hands firmly crush the grapes inside the bag.
Then add the potassium metabisulfite powder over the fruit in the bag then cover the pail and let it sit for about an hour then remove the straining bag make sure your get all of the juice out of it when you remove it.
Ok now we get the fun part of measuring temperatures and other fun stuff of your own wine, the temperature of your wine should be between fifty five degrees to sixty five degrees Fahrenheit, however if it is not you can always adjust the temperature by heating or cooling down the grape juice.
The acid level should be between six and half and seven and a half grams per liter and of course that is what the tartaric acid is if you need to make adjustments to that.
Ok yeast time now, dissolve the yeast in 1 pint of water and let it stand until it has gone bubbly, then pour over the grape juice in the pail, now the fermentation process has begun of your own wine, cover and store in a cool place.
Ok now you need to make sure that you check your wine daily that- it is fermenting, and the temperature and acid and sugar levels are regular.
Once the sugar level has reached at least 0.5 degrees Brix or 0.9998 SG you can now rack the wine in the gallon jugs.
Fit the jug with a sanitized bung and fermentation lock and top up the jug with some white wine.
After 10 days, rack the wine into another jug. Top up with wine again.
Then after three months you can siphon the wine off the sediment into clean bottles and cork them.
Now you know how to make your own wine and the best thing to do now is to store it in cool dark place however make sure you wait at least three months before you drink it.
Now you can kick back in the sun drinking your own wine.
