How To Make Meat Loaf
By Polly Hamilton Learning how to make meatloaf is something everyone should do! It is a handy recipe to have under your belt for several reasons. You can easily feed many people by doubling the ingredients and making cooking it in smaller containers. It's versatile as well, you can make meatloaf meatballs! Have with salads, winter vegetables, spaghetti.
Meatloaf is of course great in sandwiches the next day. Mince is cheap and easy to prepare too, most ten year-olds could learn how to make meatloaf with adult supervision.
Ingredients:
2 cups of fresh bread crumbs
butter (to grease the baking dish)
2 eggs
2lbs. (1 kg) of ground beef or mince
3/4 cup of milk
1 chopped onion
1 tsp. of salt
3 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp. tomato sauce (preferably chunky)
Step one: preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (170 degrees Celsius)
Step two: butter your dish, preferably 2 dishes, around 9 inches (25cm) in length, 6 inches (15 cm) wide and 4 inches (10 cm) deep.
Step three: Combine: bread crumbs, onion, mince, eggs (lightly beaten), sauces, salt and milk in a bowl. Get in there and use your hands! The consistency will be much better if you do! Make sure it is
thouroughly mixed, but not so much that it won't hold its shape. If it is too moist, add more bread crumbs.
Step four: Place mixture into two pans and shape nicely (they should look like rounded mounds).
Step five: Use a mixture of two parts tomato sauce, one part Worcestershire sauce, to coat the tops of your loaves. This creates a nice sticky, flavorsome covering.
Step six: Bake in the oven for 45 minutes, or until cooked and nicely browned. You may want to cover the loaves for the first ½ hour to ensure the tops don't burn. If you do this you can put the oven onto
grill for the last 5 minutes to ensure the top is browned.
For a slightly chunkier version add some pre-cooked mixed vegetables, or sliced carrot. How you serve it is up to you! You can have meatloaf with any type of potato, courgettes, pumpkin, or if it's summer make a nice light salad with tomatoes! Remember! Meatloaf is easy to make, but it sticks to the bottom easily too. Some cooks choose to line their dishes with cooking paper, while others place bacon strips at
the bottom. This means the loaf slides out easier, plus the added bonus of bacon flavoring!
