There are a few things you will be needing before you can in fact begin to make a homemade candle, so make sure you take note of what these requirements are, just in case you do not have them on hand, and have to make a trip to a particular store to stock up on goods.

Firstly, you will need some old candles. Candles you have purchased before or had given to you are fine. Just make sure you do not use new candles, as this really does defeat the purpose of making candles. You want to use candles that you have melted down somewhat and have become too short to light due to the amount of times you have lit them in the past.

You can have as many colors as you want, and you can even mix your colors on melting.

You will also need a pot that you no longer wish to use for anything else. When you learn how to make your own homemade candles, you will learn it is advisable to keep certain things for making your home made candles strictly for making homemade candles. I chose not to use the pot I had used for making homemade candles in for my potatoes anyway.

So now that you are beginning to learn what you need for learning how to make homemade candles, have you made sure you have a mold of some sort for your homemade candle to be structured to. If you have not got a suitable mold, because bear in mind, the candle will have to be able to slip out of a mold. And trust me, sometimes, this is easier said than done. But if you haven't, you can simply find something like a pretty little dish that can become a part of your homemade candle. And to be honest, something like this does in fact make a very pretty gift.

Now that you have all of the required goods sorted to actually be able to learn and know how to make a homemade candle, let us get to it.

All you need to know about making homemade candles now, is to basically be careful as you will be melting wax, and melted wax can be harmful. Make sure you do not have any children hanging over you or hanging from you. This is a recipe for disaster.

Place your odd bits of once used candle/s into the large pot and place on an element on your stove top. Make sure the temperature of the element is set a fairly low temperature. It is always best to melt candle wax slowly and it is also a lot safer. You may want to invest in a cheap wooden spoon to aid you in this part of learning how to make a homemade candle. Yu can gently stir the melting candle wax to possibly mix in varying colors to make a whole new color.

Now we are going to pretend that we did not have a suitable mold on hand, and are in fact using a pretty little dish to make our homemade candle with. This we can later use as a gift if we so choose to.

Once you have melted all of the candle wax that we placed into the large pot, we can then very carefully pour it into the dish we have selected for the wax to be poured into. This is in fact all we have to do with the wax. Now is the tricky part. You will have to make sure you have on hand what we call wick holders. These are small silver metal things, almost like washers, yet not, that you thread the wick through at one end a little, and attach to (in this case) the bottom of the dish, before the wax is poured over it. However this is not the tricky part, as this will have already been placed into your dish. The tricky part is getting the candle wick to stay centred while the wax dries and hardens. There are varying ways to do this, but most of them involve imagination, sometimes with other kitchen utensils and a strategically placed new homemade candle.
