How To Make A Telescope

By Lakshmi Ramchander
To answer the question how to make a telescope is easy, if you know the essence of the instrument. A telescope makes things or objects that are far away, look closer. The telescope collects light from a distant object using the first lens, called as the objective lens or the primary mirror, and gets that light to a focus as an image. The second lens, called as the eyepiece, magnifies the image obtained from the first lens and makes it visible to the eye.
To making a telescope one needs the following articles.
- Two magnifying glasses of 2.5 to 3 cm diameter and 1 - 1.5inches thicker. Try to take lenses of differing sizes.
- A long card board tube made of either a paper towel roll or a gift- wrapping paper roll,
- Sticky tape, scissors, a ruler, a tape to measure
- An old newspaper.

After having gathered all the material, we need to assemble to make a telescope. For that do the following
Firstly you require to identify the magnifying lenses as the eyepiece and the objective lens. To do this first take the two magnifying glasses and the newspaper.
- Take the bigger magnifying glass and look through it into the newspaper. You would find the image to be blurry.
- Now take the second magnifying glass between yourself and the first magnifying glass. Hold the first lens (loser to you) static, and then move the second lens forward and backward until the print becomes clear into focus. The paper would appear larger and upside down.
- Now do not change the positions of the two magnifying glasses and ask one of your friends to measure the distance between the two magnifying glasses and note it down.
- Now take the cardboard and make a cut, (do not cut completely) into it at about 2cm away from one end. Make the slot big enough so that it can hold the magnifying (larger) glass in it.
- From here take the distance measured out earlier and cut a second slot for the second magnifying glass, and insert the second magnifying glass. (Remember the distance between the two magnifying glasses should be the same as you had asked one of your friends to do it and noted it down.)
- After placing in both the glasses into their slots, (that is the bigger one in the front and the smaller one behind that) tape them in using a duct tape.
- Cut off the excess cardboard roll, after leaving about 1 inch after the smaller magnifying glass.
- Now check to see if it is working with the printed page you had used earlier. If it is not clear enough then try adjusting the glasses forwards or backwards until it becomes clear.
Once you have done this you have learnt how to make a telescope. This is called as a refracting telescope. This telescope should help you see the moon and the cluster of stars and birds, etc.
