How To Make A Quilt
By Leeanne Utiger This article will go briefly into how you can learn to make a quilt. A quilt is a very handy additional blanket to have in the cold months of winter. Learning how to make a quilt is really not that difficult, yet it can be time consuming. So if you do not have a lot of patience, i really don't think learning how to make a quilt is for you. We want you to be able to learn how to make a quilt with as little stress as possible.
I am going to give you some details on how to make a simple quilt. But bear in mind when you make the front of the quilt you are going to learn how to make, you can opt to make the shapes on the front different. However for this quilt, I am going to be using simple squares. Squares are easy to work with, and when you are learning to make a quilt for the first time, it is sometimes best to start out with something simple and not so fiddly or difficult.
You will need a backing piece of fabric for the quilt you are going to learn how to make. You will also need lots of fabric which is cut into squares. You will learn to match up your squares so you do in fact have enough cut out squared fabric to cover the size of your backing fabric piece. You do not have to use the same fabric for every little square, and you do not have to use the same fabric for the squares for your quilt as what you have used for the piece of backing fabric. In fact, I suggest you use many different sorts of fabric and fabric design pieces for your squares, that in the end become the front of the quilt you are learning how to make.
You can purchase fabric from any good fabric store or craft shop. You can in fact purchase fabric squares already cut out specifically designed for knowing how to make a quilt. So shop around and see if you can locate some of these if you want to make work lighter for yourself. These really can be quite helpful when you are learning how to make a quilt.
You will also need some Dacron. This is stuffing like material that will be placed between the backing piece of fabric for the quilt you are learning how to make and the front of the quilt you are learning how to make.
However, first we will over lock around all four edges of our piece of backing fabric for the quilt we are learning how to make. You do not have to over lock around all of the edges of every square you use for the front of the quilt you are learning how to make, however if you choose to, that is ok as well. Once you have sorted your squares and have made sure on placing them all out on top of the backing fabric to make sure they line up to fit this piece of fabric, you can now begin to sew all of your squares for the quilt you are learning how to make together. It is suggested that you do this in rows. So start with the first row of squares, moving along joining them all together by sewing a seam joining the previous square to the next with your sewing machine. Do this until you have seamed up all of the squares in each row.
Once you have done this, you can now sew the rows together, making sure you still have the initial layout in your head. We do not want you sewing the rows together running the wrong way. If you do this, the seamed rows which make up the front of the quilt you are learning how to make will come out the wrong way, and will not fit on to the piece of backing fabric for your quilt.
Once you have done this, over lock around the entire front of your quilt you are successfully learning how to make. Now that this is done, lay out your backing piece of fabric, place the Dacron over this and then lay the front piece of the quilt on top of the Dacron (right side facing upwards). Tack all three pieces of fabric together so it does not fall apart as you now have to sew them all together. Once you have tacked all of these pieces together, sew from corner to corner across the whole quilt and then from middle of the top to the middle of the bottom, and then from halfway down the left side across to half way down the right side. If you feel you need more stitching, simply use your common sense and see what would look good as a design to hold the pieces of the quilt in place.
Once you have done this, the last thing for you to learn, is how to place the bias binding (edging) on to the quilt you have almost finished learning how to make.
Pin the bias binding around the entire outside edging of the quilt and simply sew in place.
That is all there is to know about how to make a simple quilt. Best of luck!
