How to jump start a car

A man needs to know how to jump start a car. It is useful for a woman also to know how to jump start a car and probably more important she carries jumper leads when driving. Nothing is more embarrassing, frustrating or dangerous than not knowing how to jump start a car. If you are caught unawares which is usually the case with flat batteries you are not only stuck but also are vulnerable to thieves and other unsavoury individuals. Jump starting the flat battery in your car is easy if you follow the correct procedure and know how. If you don't know how, serious injury is possible. There are four simple steps to knowing how to jump start your car.

The steps involved in jump starting your car are as follows.
1. Connecting the vehicles
2. Jumping the dead battery
3. Removing jumper leads
4. Charging the battery

Before you begin jump starting your car, you must find a suitable live battery. This battery must be the same voltage as your battery. Do not attempt to jump start your car if your battery is old, frozen or cracked. You can find a suitable replacement at any auto parts store at a price depending on the make and model of your car. Whilst jump starting your car you should refrain from smoking and if possible wear gloves. If the battery's sulphuric acid comes in contact with your skin, wash with water immediately.

1. Connecting the vehicles dead battery with a live battery in another vehicle through jumper leads is simple. Jumper leads or booster cables are widely available for cheap from any petrol station or car parts store. Park the booster car close to the dead car so the cables can reach from one battery to the other. Ensure the dead car is not touching the live one. Turn off both cars. Connect the positive terminal from the live car to the positive contact of the car you wish to jump. These are the red terminals. With the other cable, attach the live car to the dead car through the negative (black) terminal to the engine block of the dead car.

2. When jumping the car ensure the contact is not touching any movable engine pieces. Keep everyone clear of the engines. Start the engine of the dead car. If it fails to start wait a few seconds and try again. If after thirty seconds the engine hasn't started you should give up and purchase a new battery. If you continue trying to jump start your car you will possibly damage your starter and flatten the good battery.

3. If the dead car starts, keep the engine running for at least 30 minutes to recharge the battery partially. The battery's alternator is not designed to recharge the car's battery if it runs flat. Remove the jumper cables in reverse order to attaching them. The order (in reverse) when jump starting a car is remove negative connection from engine block then the live car's battery. Do the same with the positive cable, first removing it from the live car then the dead.

4. After jump starting your car you must recharge the battery. To recharge your battery you should connect it to a battery charger for at least twelve hours to fully restore the charge. If you find yourself repeatedly jump starting your car it is a sure sign your battery needs replacing.

Now you know how to jump start a car.
