On learning how to housebreak your dog, you will quickly find out that there is more to a dog than just its cuteness or its lovability, dogs do not, disregarding what the children or the little granny down the road thinks, do not understand verbal English. It is a myth that they do. Maybe some would like to think their dog is cleverer than others, so have talked themselves into believing that their dog really does understand verbal English. Once you learn to understand this concept, knowing how to housebreak a dog will be much easier for you. In addition to learning about how dogs do not understand verbal English, you will also learn that dogs have love for three things, and housebreaking is not one of them. They are food, you and play. Simple really - that is what a dogs life revolves around and is what they enjoy best. So you try talking in English to a dog about why they have to be house broke, and you are going to get no where. They cant understand you, and simply, they do not care about housebreaking. So in learning this, just how are you going to housebreak your dog?
Easy! To learn and know how to housebreak your dog, you will first and foremost have to learn to think like your dog. Once you have mastered this (so to speak) only then can you find out more and begin to housebreak your loving dog.
Our everyday house dog actually is an ancestor of the wolf - yet our dog is far more docile, well in most cases. Now we all know that wolves run in packs - therefore, your dog too, will think of its environment and the ones it is around as its ‘pack'. This could mean you have become a part of your dogs ‘pack'. You will also know that every pack has a leader. Now in your dogs pack, YOU have to become that leader, the one your dog will ‘follow', and be commanded by. Most dogs prefer to not be that leader, so will gladly let you step into that position, bearing in mind, if you are a weak and intimidated leader, you will be ignored or shafted. Thus meaning, when you are learning to housebreak your dog, your dog will simply not respond. A leader of the ‘pack' needs to be strong, and to a point, assertive. This the dog will then respect and abide by, ultimately learn some housebreaking rules.
When you learn how to housebreak your dog, you will also learn to be consistent. Do not fall into the trap of doing for your dog before yourself, this is not showing who is boss. If you do for you first, or make your dog get off the furniture so you can have his spot, this is housebreaking him into not letting him have the run of the house and you. If your dog does not like your housebreaking techniques or new housebreaking rules, and growls at you, stand your ground and without touching your dog, growl back at it. This will prove once again that you are in control, and this is your house and the rules you have trained him up on are to be abided by. Gently keep probing your dog until he relents and obeys your command and has done what you have wanted.
When you are learning how to housebreak your dog, bear in mind you should never ever yell or hit your dog. You are their teacher, and we all know that no one likes to be yelled at, and no one will learn anything if they are constantly yelled at. People switch off when they are treated like this, well hey! - so do animals, dogs included. So if you think being able to housebreak your dog gives you the right to abuse your dog at the same time - I suggest you think again.
