How To Hem A Dress
By Leeanne Utiger So you want to know how to hem a dress. The actual hemming of a dress can be relatively easy. It is the measuring where you need to hem the dress that can be tedious and sometimes rather difficult. This is especially so if you are trying to hem a dress for yourself and there is no other person around to assist you with this.
So in saying that, it is always advisable when you want to learn and actually hem a dress for yourself, to have a family member or a friend over to help you. The best way to be able to learn how to hem your own dress, is for you to put the dress on and stand up on a chair. Have the other person who is there to assist you, measure for the correct hem. Once they have measured the appropriate length that you are wanting the dress to be hemmed at, get them to pin this in place.
This is likewise for when you are wanting to know how to hem a dress for a child or another person. Get that person to stand on the chair, and you yourself, do the measuring for the correct place to hem the dress and then pin it in place, ready for hemming on the sewing machine.
Now that you have managed to pin the appropriate place on the dress to be hemmed, it is time to get out your sewing machine. If you do not own a sewing machine of your own, ask a friend or family member if they have one that you can borrow so you can hem your dress, or the dress you need to hem. I am sure this will not be a problem.
Once you have a sewing machine, if not your own, make sure you also have a cotton that corresponds with the main color of the dress fabric color. You do not want to use a contrasting color unless it is highly appropriate. Now that you have the correct color cotton all sorted, you need to thread the sewing machine. Instructions on how to do this will be in the manual of the sewing machine. It is also advisable or in the very least extremely helpful to have the use of an over locker machine.
Take your dress and cut off the excess fabric that you do not require of length. With the over locker, run around the bottom edge, called the hemline of the dress. This will make a tidy edge and prevent any fraying later on down the track.
Once you have done this with the over locker, place the edge (hemline) of the dress under the foot of your sewing machine ready for sewing, making sure you have pinned the edge up to the inside of the dress fabric at least 1 ½ - 2 centimeters. This is called your hem.
With your sewing machine, simply sew with a straight stitch around the whole of the hemline, making sure you do so without going all crooked. Once you have reached the point where you started sewing, remember to reverse stitch so the sewing you have just done does not begin to come undone.
That is all there is to know about how to hem a dress. Maybe you have a friend who would also like to learn how to hem a dress. Now that you have managed to hem a dress by yourself successfully, you could in turn teach your friend or even a family member how they too can hem their own dress or hem a dress for another person.
