How To Help Quit Smoking
By Leeanne Utiger Smoking! One of the biggest addictions all over the world. And so many people all having good thought and nothing but great intention on giving up. But is it as easy as it sounds? Some will say yes, and some will say no.
Giving up on smoking and the way one does this is very much an individual thing, and the success of such a venture is entirely up to the individual involved.
We all as individuals hold different and varying attributes, therefore our strengths and weaknesses are all different. Willpower contributes highly in such a decision.
There are many ways to assist those who smoke, but would like to quit. Readily available these days, are things such as Nicotine patches, which can either be purchased at a local pharmacy or through other avenues, such as 'Quitline' programs that are set up. To reach these such services, there is often a phone listing in all local telephone directories, or more often than not, an advertisement screened on your television can supply you with the associated telephone number for contact. Often on making contact with an association such as 'Quitline' the prescription for these patches, or in some cases, also Nicotine Gum can and will be subsidised.
Hypnotherapy is another choice some will opt for. This obviously is done with the assistance of a Hypnotherapist. This too of course will come at a cost to the smoker trying to achieve his/her goal in giving up on smoking.
As well as using, or in some cases not making use of such things on offer, such as Nicotine Patches or Gum, a smoker needing help in giving up smoking needs to have a few ideas up their sleeve to keep their mind actually off the thought of having a cigarette.
Instead of reaching for a cigarette, reach for a bottle of water. Not only will it distract your thoughts from smoking, but you are in fact putting something good into your body.
If you feel slightly stressed, and where once you would reach for a cigarette, try running a nice hot bath and having a soak to relax instead. Head outside in the fresh air and go for a walk.....once again, this is good exercise, so therefore good for your health anyway, and a great way of distracting yourself away from the want of an unhealthy cigarette.
Another good incentive in assisting one to give up smoking is to do your math. Figure out the cost of what you would normally spend on your cigarettes for a week, then multiply that by 52 weeks.....write that total figure largely on a piece of paper, and magnet it to your fridge (somewhere you frequent each and every day). If you feel the need for a nicotine 'fix' - head back to this piece of paper, and then imagine what you could be doing with the money you will ultimately be saving when you achieve your goal of quitting.
Sometimes it helps for some to work in pairs or groups. Maybe a friend of yours or a family member is also wanting to break the bad habit and quit smoking. Team up and make a go of it together, be each others support system. If you feel tempted, simply get in touch with this support network and help each other out. And a bit of competition amongst friends can be fun and encouraging.
Many social gathering places over the world these days cater for non-smokers only, meaning if you do smoke, you have to remove yourself from the premises and in fact take your habit outside. This can also be a very helpful deterrent of smoking for someone who wants help in giving up smoking.
Now remember the four Ds:
Delay - Delay for at least five minutes, the urge will pass.
Deep breathe - Breathe slowly and deeply.
Do something else - Keep your hands busy.
Drink water - Take 'time out', sip slowly.
