How To Grow Mushrooms

By Jen
Mushrooms, you either love them or you don't. However mushrooms can add so much wonderful flavors to so many dishes. So how do you grow mushrooms? So I can cut down on the costs of buying them from the supermarket!

Ok mushrooms are a fungus and grow from spores; they usually grow in an organic matter, compost or dirt, than the rest is up to heat and humidity.
There are so many different varieties of mushrooms, and all have different growing temperatures and conditions.

Of course sometimes mushrooms spring up outside in the wilderness but how do we know we aren't going to pick a deadly one? That's why you can buy mushroom grower kits.
Some kits you can buy from local gardening stores that are about $20-30 each and already have everything in the soil you need and regenerate about three times after you have used the mushrooms, this will be helpful if you do not have the time or the space to grow them from scratch.
Some kits can be used for outside mushroom growth on logs, however these usually take up to nine months or longer for any thing to grow.
Of course you will have to follow instructions on the kit, and keep it moist at all times.

There are lots of different mushroom kits available to grow mushrooms with and sometimes consist of a bag of peat moss and a brick of compost with a layer of mold on it, the mold is where the mushroom seeds or spores live.
And different mushrooms can with stand different heats.
So these are rough instructions on how to grow inside mushrooms:
Scratch the top of the mold with a fork about an inch deep to loosen it all up, then grab about a handful of compost and mix it in with the peat moss.
Add five cups of water and mix it all up and leave to set for about ten minutes.
Then spread that mixture over soil packing it down to about a inch thick, then sprinkle with some more water, then ruffle the surface with a fork again.
Now keep it in a room with temperatures of about seventy-two degrees or cooler depending on the type of mushroom and keep them out of direct sunlight.
Do not put the mushrooms in complete darkness, some light is needed to draw the mushrooms up and out of the soil.
Some mushroom kits also come with tents to go over the mushrooms to keep the temperature up and the humidity high as well however always make sure when you grow your mushrooms that you keep a good eye on them and make sure the mushrooms don't get too wet or too dry.
Soon you will see little mushroom stems and caps emerging from the soil that will grow into your big nice mushrooms.
But mostly the temperature of the room and the soil must be kept at a constant temperature, and it usually takes about 25 days at the max to produce full mature mushrooms.

Or there are other kits that just let you soak the mold compost brick then let it grow, it all depends on what kind of mushroom and what manufacturer you got it from, however all mushrooms need humidity and moisture.
So I hope this helps you on your quest to grow mushrooms however if your mushrooms do not successfully grow the first time remember always keep trying.
