How To Grow Crystal

By Jenna Litchfield
Crystals, one of nature's most beautiful creations, that come from the earth usually come in many a different shapes and forms, and different colors as well, they can be used for medicinal purposes and for jewelry.
The most beautiful crystals are grown naturally, however we will learn how to grow them ourselves, so in turn we will have man made crystals.
Many kids have experimented in school science classes growing crystals just by using salt.
An easy at home way to learn how to grow salt crystals:

A heat-proof, glass jar
A measuring cup
About 1 cup of boiling water
About 1/2 cup of salt
A pencil
Cotton string
A spoon
A paperclip
A paper towel

Ok tie the cotton string to the pencil then the paper clip to the end of the string make sure it is long enough that it touches the bottom of your glass you are using.
Boil the water and pour the water into the heatproof glass jar, add the salt one-teaspoon at a time, eventually it will not dissolve, perfect crystal growing material this is a saturated solution.
Then lower the cotton string into the glass and rest the pencil across the top of the glass then cover with a paper towel.
Halite crystals more commonly known as salt will then form shortly after 12 hours.
Experiment with different salts to get different crystal formations.

Other ways to grow crystals can involve sugar and other dissolvable ingredients! By growing crystal seeds you can then grow bigger crystals.
Crystal ingredients:
Sugar
Salt
Alum (usually aluminum ammonium sulphate)
Copper Sulfate
Rochelle Salt
Potassium Ferricyanide

All of these are available from most pharmacies as well.

Instructions on how to grow bigger crystals:
Ok first of all we basically need to repeat the above salt crystal growing process, except we are suing Alum, pour some Alum into a jar with water in it, keep mixing until no more will dissolve, then pour the mixture into another container making sure that none of the alum powder gets poured into this jar, then cap it this is our saturated solution.

Ok now we will need to pour some of the crystal growing solution into a wide flat low jar, cover with a paper towel and let crystals form, they need to be big enough so you can use them with your fingers however it may take some time so be patient.

Now we have seed crystals to use to grow bigger crystals!!!!
We will now need yet another container, quite wide it needs to be, and also a piece or wire to hang across the top of the jar, or a pencil whatever does the job, and some string or cotton, to tie around the seed crystal.
Tie the piece of string or cotton around the seed crystal then to the wire or pencil and hang across the jar, making sure the crystal is almost touching the bottom.
Now fill the jar with the solution you made to begin with, and then cover the top of the jar with a paper towel to keep the dust out.
Now place the crystal growing mixture out of the sun, and wait for the mixture to evaporate of course you can grow the crystal bigger and bigger by repeating the process, however it may take a long time to grow, so have patience and you will get rather larger crystals.
