How To Grow Avocados

Maybe you have tried your hand at growing a few things, and now want to broaden out and learn how to grow avocados. If this is the case, or you just have an interest in how to grow avocados, then keep reading this article, as it goes into brief detail on just how you can grow avocados.

When you begin to learn how to grow avocados, you will also learn what to grow them from and where to plant them and then how to nurture and look after the avocados until they are ready to be picked and eaten.

Try growing an avocado or a few avocados using the 'pit' of an avocado you may have already eaten. The 'pit' is the stone like center of an avocado.

Once you have removed a 'pit' from either a ripe avocado, or one you have just eaten, wash it in warm water. You will need to have on hand some toothpicks or something similar that will work in the same way as a toothpick. At the widest end of the avocado 'pit' you will need to place three toothpicks. Push the three toothpicks in far enough to hold the weight of the avocado 'pit' once placed over a small container. The three toothpicks keeps the avocado 'pit' balanced and above the container. You do not want the 'pit' of the avocado to end up completely sitting in the container that you will be placing it over.

Get a small container, or even a glass if that is more convenient for you and place the avocado 'pit' over the rim of the container or glass, just so once balanced the bottom of the avocado 'pit' rests in the top of the water which you will have placed in the container or the glass. Do not submerge the avocado 'pit' completely.

You will learn how to keep the avocado 'pit' which is now placed in the container or glass in a warm sunny spot. I will suggest a kitchen window sill. On learning how to grow avocados, you will find out that the avocados 'pit' needs the warmth, yet does not need a CHANGE of water. Simply top up the water level as it evaporates. Do NOT empty out any that has not evaporated. On finding more out about how to grow avocados, you will also discover that it is not advisable to let the avocado 'pit' to dry out. You will not successfully grow ripe avocados if you do so.

In just a few weeks, the 'pit' of the avocados will actually crack open and you will see that a stem is beginning to sprout from it. By this stage, in your task at learning how to grow an avocados, the 'pit' of the avocados should also have roots appearing. Once the stem is a good length, say 3 inches long, the avocados 'pit' is ready for planting elsewhere.

There is no longer any need for the toothpicks, so you can remove these. You do not plant these with the avocados 'pit' that has grown roots and a stem or stems. If the avocado 'pit' has more than one stem, simply leave them all attached. There is no need to remove any.

It is suggested that you plant the avocados 'pit' into either a clay pot or terracotta plant pot. Using part soil and part sand will help the growth of your avocados more so than just planting in straight soil. When you plant the avocados 'pit', always make sure that the top end is still exposed to the daylight. You do not want to completely plant and bury the avocados 'pit' in your soil and sand mix. This will let the sunlight on to your avocados 'pit', hopefully encouraging further growth of new stems.

When you read more on how to grow avocados, you will learn that for the first week after planting the avocado 'pit', you will have to continuously water it, daily to be exact. After this first week from planting you can then reduce the watering to once a week.

You will also learn when you find out how to grow an avocado, that if you want a bushier avocado plant, simply trim the leaves every now and then. They will grow back thicker.

An avocado plant certainly makes a nice house plant, so the more care you take of the avocado plant the better the appearance it will give.

That's all there is to know on how to grow an avocado from a avocado 'pit'. Follow the brief directions above and see how the avocado plant you learned how to grow goes. If you have success growing your own avocado plant, maybe you would like to share this information with one of your friends or even a family member.

Happy Planting!
