How To Fix A Lawn Mower

By Joshua Jenkins
A lawnmower is an important part of any shed or garage. Petrol powered lawnmowers can be more effective than the alternative electric, however they are more likely to break down. When it breaks down it can be a major problem, seeking professional help can prove costly so doing it yourself is a more economical option. The first thing to do is remove the spark-plug lead from the plug, this will ensure there is no power and will prevent you from losing any vital limbs.

There are many ways that you can prevent the need for repairs by keeping your mower well maintained. At the end of summer change the oil, this will help keep things lubricated. You should also drain the engine of fuel, this is achieved by running the mower dry, this will prevent evaporation and/or oxidation. Clearing the underbody of the mower of leaves and dirt is a simple way of preventing clogging.

Find out whether your mower is two or four-stroke, if it is four-stroke i.e. it has separate oil and petrol tip it with the spark-plug facing the ground, if it is two-stroke i.e. mixed petrol and oil it can be tipped safely at any angle. Checking the air filter is important because a clogged filter will prevent the mower from running right. If you are replacing the blade it is advisable to ‘lock’ the piston by feeding some string through the cylinder head. Be very careful with any blades you handle, they can appear blunt but don’t be fooled, an old blade will most often retain its sharpness.

Watching for signs that your mower needs fixing is easy. If it kicks back when you try and start it seek professional help, it most likely has timing issues and the mechanics require in-depth knowledge. If its rattling check the blades, they may need replacing. A new air-filter will fix it if it is coughing and spluttering, and if it does not go at all it may require more fuel or it a new spark-plug. Check the spark-plugs as regularly as possible, this means removing and inspecting them. The curved electrode tip should be smooth and grey or brown in color. The standard gasoline-powered rotary mower usually starts though manual recoil (pull) cord, however more sophisticated models (ride-ons etc) may utilise electronic ignition. If yours is of the pull variety and it isn’t starting the cord may need replacing.

It is important to keep a lawnmower well-maintained, it could save you both time and money. Following these simple suggestions will help keep your lawnmower running efficiently.
