How To Draw Face

By Leeanne Utiger
Now you want to learn how to draw a face. The main thing to remember when learning how to draw a face, is the features on a face. If you forget a face has a nose for example, the face once drawn will look rather strange, and also wrong. You cannot possibly forget to include any feature that a face does in fact hold. It also depends on how detailed you want to draw the face in the first place.

Many people are quite happy to know how to draw a simple face. Children for example will not be very interested in going into too much detail when learning how to draw a face, especially the younger children.

You will need something to draw with of course and some art paper to draw your face onto. This really does come down to commonsense though.

Now that you have something to draw with, be it a pencil or some crayons, and some paper ready, you are now able to begin learning how you can draw a face.

Let us begin with the eyes. Many people, especially children will automatically draw the eyes round, like circles. This is a common perception people have on what eyes look like. However when you draw the eyes try to form corners on either side of the eye. Kind of like two curved lines that join at the sides. Then you will have to draw a circle inside this first shape of the eye. And on doing that, yet again a smaller circle inside the first circle. These three shapes represent the different parts of an eye. Naturally you will need to draw two of these, as we have two eyes on our face. Make sure you have a balanced space between the two eyes. Now move down slightly and draw what you perceive to be a nose. Noses can be drawn in many ways. Once again, children in particular have the perception that all noses are round so drawn as a circle. Try to learn how to draw a nose how it looks on a persons face. Maybe as you draw the nose, you can have a person sitting in front of you. Once you have drawn the nose centred, yet down from the eyes, once again in a 'balanced' position, you can move on to drawing a mouth. Consider what a mouth looks like, how the lips of a mouth are formed and shaped. Have this image in your head as you are drawing the outlines for the mouth. Once you have what appears to be a fairly similar drawing of what a mouth looks like, move back to the eyelashes and eyebrows. Draw little shot curvy lines coming above each eye you have previously drawn. Then, just above these, draw in your eyebrows. DO not make your eyebrows too long or too sharp looking. Now you can draw in your hair. Depending on what gender of face you are drawing will determine how you want to draw your hair. Let us say you are drawing the face of a boy. For hair, you can simply draw short lines going straight upwards, and a couple going from the top side of the face you have drawn outwards. These lines represent spiked hair.

That is the basic way to know how to draw a face, and really is quite sufficient for many people, especially children.

However some others are more interested in going into finer detail when they want to learn how to draw a face. They may want to include how a cheekbone sits, or wrinkle lines etc. This form of face drawing is more for an older person, or a person very interested in art.

There are also many ways to draw a face using different coloring techniques and drawing tools. Experiment with these, and be creative. You won't know how good you are at drawing a face until you give it a go. I always find when learning how to draw different faces, it is helpful to have a book in front of me, for copying from.
