How To Decorate A Wedding Cake
By Leeanne Utiger It is time to decorate the wedding and you want to know how to so.
To begin with, you will have to take into consideration how many tiers you have to ice for a particular wedding cake. Some people will opt for a basic one tier cake, while others may have a wedding cake far more luxurious, and in fact have up to 5 tiers. It really is up to the individuals involved and the choice they have made regarding their wedding cake.
Before you ice the wedding cake, (if it is not your own wedding cake), it is suggested that you know how to compliment the colors that the bridal party are wearing. Or in the very least, ask the bridal party or the person who has taken over the wedding cake planning, which colors are preferred for the cake decorating. You would not want to decorate the wedding cake and then have the 'owners' of the cake screw their nose in disgust or dislike. A wedding cake, believe it or not, is as important a part of a wedding as any other plan.
Once you have the knowledge of how many tiers you will have to ice and what color preference the 'owner' wants, you can then go ahead and make sure you have on hand all of the required ingredients and decorations for icing and decorating.
You will need to have a substance called 'plastic icing'. This is a hard type icing that you fold over the cake, as opposed to smoothing it on with a spatula or knife. You can of course opt to use other icing, but you must bear in mind when the cake is going to be used. A wedding cake which has been iced with plastic icing will in fact last for a lot longer and can be prepared ahead of time. You will also need to have some almond icing. This is a dough like icing that you also place all over the cake. The almond icing is like an under icing. This is placed on the cake first, and then the plastic icing is placed over this, covering the entire of the wedding cake. Once you have these two lots of icings in place, you will now be ready to actually decorate the wedding cake.
Knowing how to decorate a wedding cake, can be fun, but can also involve a lot of intricate work. Many cake decorators will actually make their own flower decorations out of a sugar icing. The sugar is used for the hardening and the setting of the chosen decoration made. This can involve a lot of time before hand, so do not rush things. Give yourself plenty of time to make sure you have all of the required decorations made in advance, if this is an option you go for. To find out about how you can make your own sugar icing decorations, speak to someone in a professional cake shop, or you can even visit your local library and book out a book on cake decorations and how to make them. These books are readily available. You may even come across an interesting idea you can use, that you never have before.
Back to the decorations. As I mentioned above, you can choose to make some yourself out of sugar icing. However, you can also choose to purchase, or you may have on hand plastic cake decorations. If you do not have any at home, these too are also readily available at certain cake places, and even some craft stores or department stores. You can purchase bride and groom figurines, flowers, horseshoes, bells, the list really is endless, and it all comes how to how YOU choose to decorate the wedding cake you have iced beforehand.
It is suggested that you also have ribbon on hand. Ribbon is a good aid for wrapping around the lower tiers of the cake. You simply cut the correct length of ribbon for each tier, and wrap this around the side of the cake tier. You can either choose to connect it together with a small squirt of icing, which will set and hold the ribbon in place, or use a very small pin. One which is almost invisible to the eye when looking at the wedding cake.
Now to the top tier and the very top of the wedding cake. You need to know about balance of objects, in this case decorations, when you are decorating a wedding cake. It is similar to decorating a bedroom. You do not want to over crowd the top of the final cake tier and make things look 'busy'. Sometimes the simpler, the better and more attractive to the eye.
Strategically place the decorations you have chosen to use, remembering to leave enough room on the top of this tier for some writing. Most wedding cakes will have the couples name and date of the wedding piped into the cake with icing. In the very least the date of the wedding is somewhere on the cake with a small message of wedding greetings. It once again comes down to preference of who the cake is for.
When you learn how to decorate a wedding cake, look through as many books as you possibly can, even consider looking through bridal magazines. You may get a few ideas from in one of these. Be creative and use your imagination. There is also no harm in trying out your decorating technique on a pre trial cake. Simply whip up a quick cake mix and have a go at decorating that. Most decorations can be easily removed and washed.
Other than that, decorating a wedding cake is simply an honour. Make sure when you do take on the task of being able to decorate a wedding cake, you have quiet time to yourself to do this. Disturbances cause distraction, and distraction causes mistakes!
