How To Choose A Career
By Jason Taingahue When learning how to choose a career we must first look at what a career is.
Below i have gone into some detail on knowing how to choose a career.
A career is a lot more than a job. A career starts off as a job but grows, or is capable of growing and is more like long term work that you have control of, and can choose to change to suit your lifestyle. A career is a job that you can see realistically taking you places, or improving the longer you stick at it. Knowing how to find such a job can work to your advantage. Any job can be turned into a career, it all depends on how passionate you are for the type of job you are doing, and your love of the industry you are in. Your best bet is to know how to find and choose a job that you really like doing, every single day and you are likely to still feel that way in 20yrs time. When we first start thinking of how to choose a career we must first decide if we want to start in a job that we are good at or absolutely need, or a job that we have always wanted.
To be able to choose a career you need to have goals. Dreams are good as well, but goals have an end date, so you are able to continue moving forward (which is what a career does). This will drive you to turn your day to day job into that career that you want. When we set goals we drive ourselves to succeed. You should never be pressured to choose a career because your parents expect you to choose one sooner rather than later. Most people work in a job that has nothing to do with what they actually wanted to choose to do. Just getting out there and working is a big enough change without actually deciding right now what career path you are going to choose.
So how do we choose a career, well that all depends on you. Maybe you have seen someone that you admire as a child and want to be just like them? Maybe you had a great experience with a person of the community and you want to do the same? Maybe you just watched television one night and decided that you want to be that person on the television? Maybe you had a bad experience with a professional person and vowed to change their profession? You have most probably been in at least one of these positions during your lifetime and thinking about these things will drive you towards the choosing a career. Don't let this consume you though, and do not worry if you change your mind about your chosen career, it happens.
Unfortunately you may have to work in several different positions in several different industries before you can actually choose a career. It may be obvious to you straight away what career you want to choose, but if it isn't don't worry. Some people have the luxury of knowing what career they want to choose very early on in life, but not everyone is that lucky. It may take years before you know what career you want to pursue. It is a good idea to know what skills are involved when you have chosen a career so that you can put yourself on the right course to be trained up, and achieve the required academic achievements to show a potential employer. Your enthusiasm for your career will drive you to acquire the right skills and you may have many of them to start off with.
